Uppsala Forum for Africa Studies The Forum for Africa Studies is an inter-disciplinary centre at Uppsala University.

Welcome to the offical page of Uppsala University's Forum for Africa Studies, an inter-disciplinary centre that engages in research projects, organizes public lectures and round-tables, hosts seminar series, and fosters collaborations. The purpose is to support research on Africa in Uppsala University and to facilitate contacts and the exchange of research information between departments

as well as outside of the university. Forum leads research projects, organizes lectures and round-tables, and hosts its seminar series Friday Seminar in Africa Studies. The Forum for Africa Studies is a centre at the Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology at Uppsala University.

Burkinabe Film Director Dani Kouyate, based in Uppsala and affiliated to Uppsala University's Forum for Africa Studies, has been awarded yet another prestigeous award for his film - the dance of the scorpions. Congratulations. So well deserved.

A double-panel on Academic collaborations in and with the Sahel was co-organized at the Swiss and German joint meeting on African Studies at Universität Basel 26-28 August 2026. Convenors were Sten Hagberg (Uppsala University's Forum for Africa Studies), Muriel Côte (Lund University), and Éric Hahonou (Roskilde Universitet – RUC) under the umbrella of the Collaborative Research Group Sahel/PAX. The panel discussed how to promote academic collaborations and spaces in times of crisis.

Forum for Africa Studies vists Initiative Afrique

On 24 August, Professor Sten Hagberg, Uppsala University's Forum for Africa Studies, visited Initiative Afrique, Universität Bern. The visit was hosted by Dr. Djouroukoro Diallo, the Head of Initiative Afrique. Hagberg also met colleagues at the International Office, as well as Initiative Afrique: Henritette Graf, Annie Cottier, and Kylian Douhou. Bintou Koné, University of Bayreuth, and affiliated to the Forum for Africa Studies, also participated in the visit.

The visit was geared towards strengthening the existing partnerships, and collaborations between our universities, particularly in the terms of engagements in, on and with Africa.

Här en intervju med professor Sten Hagberg, Uppsala University's Forum for Africa Studies, om Local Democracy Academy som han var med och arrangerade tillsammans med ICLD - Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy.

Akademin som ägde rum i Visby 17-19 augusti 2026 genomfördes på Campus Gotland. Femtio forskare från 22 länder möttes för att presentera forskingsresultat och diskutera hur forskning och praktiskt arbete kan samverka.

Between 17, and 19 August, the 2026 Local Democracy Academy takes places at Uppsala University's Campus Gotland in . The Academy is co-organized by ICLD - Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy and Uppsala University's Forum for Africa Studies. Some 50 researchers from 22 countries across the world present research results and practical experiences of local democracy work. Under the theme Local Democracy Against Autocratization: Resistance and Preparedness, intense workshops and roundtables are ongoing.

Nästa vecka hålls konferensen ”Local Democracy Academy” på Campus Gotland. Internationellt Centrum för Lokal Demokrati (ICLD) och Forum för Afrikastudier vid Uppsala universitet står som medarrangörer för konferensen, som samlar omkring femtio forskare i Visby.

Måndag 17 augusti kl. 15.00–16.30 kan du få en inblick i konferensen då allmänheten är inbjuden till ett öppet rundabordssamtal i hörsal E22 om lokal demokrati som motvikt till auktoritarism.

Bland talarna finns forskare inom lokal demokrati från Kenya, Indonesien, Spanien och Sverige. Panelen har titeln Local Democracy as a Counterweight to Authoritarianism — ett angeläget och högaktuellt tema i en tid av demokratisk tillbakagång, ökad polarisering, attacker mot självständiga institutioner och en minskad tilltro till politiken.
