What's increasingly important to me is balance in life - my hobby has been home organization for many years - i.e. to make your home and related tasks as easy and quick as possible. Lately I'm more and more into minimalism. It's liberating to have less stuff.
The life and team coaching course I took a couple of years ago is very much related to that peace and harmony that's so elusive to many of us. The society we live in values long hours of work and consumerism, often at the expense of as you say meaningful pursuits and endeavors - including building relationships and spending time with people we love, doing things we love. I guess part of this journey has come from achieving many of the things you're "supposed to" - house, cars, career, posessions - and not feeling fulfilled. It's also growing older (and wiser, who knows?) and realizing that today is the most important day. Plans are great, but what is it that you really want?
In my coaching my clients decide what they want to talk about, I listen and my job is to hear what they really talk about, and direct them to probe those issues. It's a detective work at times, where the person often is not consciously aware of what they're really feeling. Bringing that up in the light often leads to revelations and insights for the person.
Coaching is not like therapy in that it is not trying to fix something that's broken - it's about bringing forth the true potential of the person and light that spark in their eyes. It's great to see that happen. It's often liberating also to realize that a lot of the thoughts and conceptions you have, are ok to let go of and they have no productive use in your life. Often they are remnants of old experiences that we need to let go of. We just need to be aware of them to be able to do so.
A session is often quite introspective but it's also refreshing to realize what you truly dream of, and to accept that those dreams are totally doable is exhilirating. That's when the magic happens. The last step is often to make a concrete plan, step by step, to achiving that new, true goal.
