How can we stay with the trouble and dwell in the collapsing space between the urgent and the eternal?

The global landscape of 2026 is defined by a sense of fracture and eroding baselines. We see it in the stalling currents of the Atlantic and the geopolitical tensions stretching from the Arctic to the Middle East. As carbon budgets dwindle and the 2030 threshold looms, the distance between scientific projections and our lived reality has vanished. We inhabit a strange paradox where we are simultaneously running out of time and standing at the threshold of a new, long-lasting era of instability. In the face of tipping points and a shifting world order, we gather in Uppsala to search for meaning and community, feeling our way through the approaching darkness.

How do we maintain a sense of place and direction when the natural and political maps are being redrawn and discarded? In an age of extreme weather and ecological loss, how do we navigate the tension between immediate crisis and the slow, deep time of the earth? If the systems we relied upon are failing, what new bridges can we build between the practical needs of survival and the existential need for meaning? How can we stay with the trouble and dwell in the collapsing space between the urgent and the eternal?

CEMUS, Uppsala University invite you to join us for an engaging ClimateExistence conference! We aim to be a creative meeting place for artists, activists, academics, faith practitioners, and anyone interested in the existential and practical aspects of the climate emergency.

Hösten 2026 inleder vi Framtidsakademin pod med Daniel Nohrstedt, Professor vid Statsvetenskapliga institutionen, Uppsala universitet, och pratar "Krisberedskap och totalförsvaret: Hur stärker vi samhällets robusthet i en tid av ökade säkerhetshot och samhällelig sårbarhet?"

Och 7 oktober fortsätter vi på ett angränsande tema med Isak Svensson, Professor vid Institutionen för freds- och konfliktforskning vid Uppsala universitet "Medling för kärnvapennedrustning: Då, nu och framåt"

Varmt välkomna till Mallas sal, på Stadsbiblioteket i Uppsala!

Framtidsakademin är ett samarbete mellan CEMUS vid Uppsala universitet, Folkuniversitetet Uppsala och Stadsbiblioteket Uppsala. Syftet med samarbetet är att sprida aktuell forskning till intresserade människor utanför universitetets väggar. Verksamheten finansieras med stöd från Folkuniversitetsföreningen.

Den 23 september drar vi igång höstens träffar för särskilt begåvade elever som vill utforska framtidsfrågor och hållbarhet. På Biotopia och CEMUS.

Vill du arbeta med tvärvetenskapliga lösningar på vår tids stora samhällsutmaningar tillsammans med studenter från hela Norden?

Den 1 juni är sista anmälningsdag till höstens engagerande intensivkurs som ges av Bergen universitet, inom ramen för CEMUS Nordplus-samarbete. Kursen genomförs som ett så kallat Blended Intensive Programme (BIP), vilket innebär att lärandet sker både genom digitala tillfällen online och under en intensiv vecka på plats i Bergen under hösten 2026.

Det här är en möjlighet för dig som vill utveckla praktiska verktyg för systemtänkande, samarbeta över ämnesgränser och möta komplexa hållbarhetsfrågor i en internationell miljö. Kursen kombinerar akademiskt djup med engagerande arbetsformer där studenters drivkraft står i centrum.

Join us for a free, hands-on upcycling workshop on May 19–20 in the Botanical Garden (May 19 rain backup: CEMUS Library; May 20: Water Lily Pond). Led by Sonali Phadke, Stephanie Foote, and Daniel Mossberg, we will transform discarded materials into beautiful, functional items.

Participation is free, and you can attend the full workshop or individual modules. Materials, coffee, and tea are provided; please bring your own lunch and a lawn chair or blanket.
