Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details...
App Store: https://apps.apple.com/se/app/svenska-runstenar/id6464495523

The replica of the Kilbar runestone Sc 8 from Scotland has now arrived to its owner!

The inscription runs in three rows on the back side of the stone and says: “In memory of Þorgerðr, Steinarr’s daughter(?), this cross is raised…
By the way, you can read more about this stone and all other runic inscriptions from Scotland, Orkney, Shetland and England in the Michael P. Barnes’ and R. I. Pages’ great volume “The Scandinavian Runic Inscriptions of Britain”.

Congatulations to Henrik Williams who had a book release tonight! Ask now after this cutie in your favourite bookstores 🙂

This replica of the Möjbo rune stone (Uppland) is one of the most popular. I receive orders to make this one  quite often! Unfortunately the original rune stone is not on display ... and Wikipedia is wrong. It has been on display in Swedish National Historical Museum for many years but not during the last ten years. And I have seen it in Swedish National Historical Museum’s store rooms in Tumba. It is laying on the floor and this is a very sad view...

It has an inscription in Proto-Norse language:

frawaradaz anahaha islaginaz

There is no problem with its reading, but the interpretation  is a bit complicated. The first part of the inscription  can be understood as a personal name . The last part is also easy: it can be interpreted as ”is killed”.  But what about the middle part ? It has a lot of different interpretations.  For example a famous Swedish runologist Otto von Friesen suggested 1913 that could be interpreted as ”Ane the one-eyed.”

A German runologist Wolfgang Krause suggested 1932 that this part means ”on the horse”: “Frawaradaz on the horse is killed”.

The latest interpretation was suggested by prof. Staffan Friedell in 2008 (and Wikipedia doesn’t know it either) And I personally think that Staffan is right.  He interprets ana haha quite convincing  as ”close to the inlet”. So it is about a known toponym.

This stone is notable also for its images. It shows a rider on a horse with two dogs. Otto von Friesen suggested that its pictures have been inspired by continental Germanic images of victorious warriors on horses.
