📚 SEL & Literacy: A Powerful Connection ✨
How do emotions and relationships shape learning? The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) explores this vital question in their brief, The Role of SEL in Improving Literacy Development.
💡 Key Takeaways:
🔗 SEL and literacy go hand in hand: Research shows that integrating social-emotional learning (SEL) into literacy instruction helps students develop not just academic skills but also critical thinking, empathy, and civic reasoning.
📖 Reading by third grade matters: Proficiency by this milestone is tied to future academic and social success, while falling behind can lead to negative long-term outcomes.
🌟 SEL competencies support literacy: Skills like self-awareness, social awareness, and relationship building enhance literacy development—and literacy builds these SEL skills in return.
By creating supportive learning environments that merge emotional well-being with literacy practices, educators can unlock students' full potential for academic achievement and active citizenship.

🌟 The Power of SEL: Building Identity, Relationships, and Community 🌟
Social-emotional learning (SEL) isn't just another lesson to squeeze into the day—it's a transformative journey that helps students grow emotionally, socially, and personally.
💡 What happens when SEL gets the time and consistency it deserves?
As an educator shared, dedicating five years to the same group of children created space for powerful growth:
✨ Building trust: Students went from asking, “Who are you?” to openly sharing their feelings and advocating for themselves.
✨ Exploring identity: Integrating identity into SEL fosters self-awareness and equips students with tools to navigate the world authentically.
✨ Tackling tough topics: Honest discussions about racism, injustice, and lived experiences emerged—led by students, validated by educators.
SEL done right empowers students to be better citizens, think critically, and embrace each other’s identities. It builds a foundation of safety, trust, and respect that transforms classrooms into communities.
Let’s give SEL the time it deserves to create a lasting impact. 🌈

🌍In today's world, marked by health crises, wars, and environmental challenges, Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) has become increasingly important. SEL, defined as the process of managing emotions, building relationships, and making responsible decisions, is gaining recognition worldwide as a crucial component of education.
💥 Yet, it is often absent from formal curricula.
In collaboration with the Networking to Integrate SDG 4.7 and SEL Skills into Education Materials (NISSEM), UNESCO-IBE’s latest paper explores the significance of SEL in driving global educational transformation. Virtual Empathy: Teaching Kids to Be Kind Online 💻💙
🌐 Virtual Empathy: Teaching Kids to Be Kind Online 💻💙
In today’s digital world, teaching kids how to behave with kindness online is more important than ever. With rude comments, cyberbullying, and online hate being widespread, it’s crucial to equip our children with virtual empathy—the ability to understand and relate to others’ feelings online.
💡 Why It Matters: Empathy helps kids build better relationships, make thoughtful decisions, and respond to others with compassion, both in real life and online. Teaching this life skill early sets them up for healthier interactions as they navigate the digital world.
📖 Ways to Build Virtual Empathy:
Label emotions: Help kids understand and talk about feelings.
Use mood trackers: Encourage reflection on emotions during challenges.
Role play: Ask questions about how characters or others might feel, fostering deeper understanding.
👩🏫 The Role of Parents & Caregivers: Be emotionally available, model empathy in your own behavior (online and offline), and guide them on how to use the internet responsibly. Showing kindness to others is a powerful way for kids to learn.
By teaching our kids virtual empathy, we’re preparing them to be kinder and more understanding in a world that can often be harsh. Let's build a kinder digital future! 🌟

Are schools and teachers ready for social and emotional learning?
Schools are perfect hubs for social and emotional learning, but are they ready for this task? To address this question, this Spotlight reports previously unpublished findings from the OECD’s Survey on Social and Emotional Skills (SSES) and discusses their implications for education policy and practice. Both an active promotion in schools and extensive learning opportunities for teachers on relevant topics provide a fertile ground for an effective social and emotional education. They boost teachers’ self-efficacy and use of active learning pedagogies, as well as quality relationships at school. The Spotlight also points to important differences for teachers of 10- vs. 15-year-old students that can explain higher skills at a younger age. Younger students benefit more often from key elements of an effective social and emotional education in school, i.e. the evaluation of their social and emotional skills and teachers teaming up with parents to reinforce skill promotion. Teachers of 10-year-olds are also more intensively trained and requested to promote social and emotional learning in their work. ENSŌ Hub MIR Akademien
