Congratulations to our researcher Muhammad Ragab, who has just received a well-deserved project grant from Vetenskapsrådet for his work on Scribal Variability in the Workmen’s Community from Deir el-Medina (SVar).

Just in time for the holiday season we’re wrapping up this semester in the best possible way. Our Assisstant Professor, Dr. Luigi Prada, took his students to library Carolina Redeviva to have a look at their collection of papyri. Some of these include the Book of the Dead, administrative documents, and letters from all periods of ancient Egypt.

Yesterday, we had the honour to welcome in Uppsala His Excellency the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to the Kingdom of Sweden, Mr Ahmed Adel Sobhy, and his wife Mrs Marwa Amin.
The Ambassador and his wife met with the academic staff of our Egyptology unit and were offered a behind-the-scene tour of the ancient Egyptian collection held in our University Museum, the Gustavianum (reopening to the public in 2024). They also sat through presentations of current fieldwork and other research project by our Egyptologists, including Chair Prof. Andreas Dorn, Drs Angus Graham, Luigi Prada, and Sami Uljas, PhD Candidates Josefin Percival and Muhammad Ragab, Visiting Researcher Dr Roser Marsal Aguilera, as well as Dr. Hesham El-Seedi (medical chemistry).
We look forward to further extending the partnership and collaborations between Uppsala University’s Department of Archaeology and Ancient History and our Egyptian colleagues and cultural institutions!

Happy International Mother Language Day!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We want to take this opportunity to shed some light on the last stage of the ancient Egyptian language, namely Coptic. Although it counts as the last remnant of ancient Egyptian it is still spoken today, albeit by a limited population. Coptic is closely tied to the Coptic Christian Orthodox Church and has mostly been used in religious text. However, some people still use it and it is indeed still taught.

As our doctoral student, Muhammad Ragab, published his article on the veneration of Amun-Re in graffiti around the Valley of the Kings in the Journal of Egyptian Archaeology, his drawing of one of these scenes were featured by social media.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We wish to congratulate Muhammad on his publication and look forward to further insight into the graffiti of the Theban necropolis.

During the autumn term, our third-year undergraduates read a selection of hieroglyphic texts in Old Egyptian, the phase of the ancient Egyptian language which was primarily used during the Old Kingdom (third millennium BCE).
Last week, we tackled in class the inscription of Rewer, a rather unique text from the Fifth Dynasty (ca. 2450 BCE), pictured here. This inscription makes for a fascinating if cringy reading, as it tells of an accident which occurred in the middle of a formal ceremony carried out by pharaoh Neferirkare Kakai. In the text’s own words, as the ceremony is unfolding, "... the staff that was in the hand of His Majesty got in the way of the foot of the sem-priest Rewer...", with the result—it is generally assume—that the unlucky Rewer, having tripped over the royal staff, may have fallen to the ground, causing a small pandemonium in the midst of what should have been a most solemn ritual.
Luckily, as the text continues, pharaoh Neferirkare forgave poor Rewer on the spot, declaring that he should not be punished and that the story of his mishap—and his royal pardon—should be recorded for eternity in an inscription to be placed within Rewer’s tomb in Giza. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
