TODAY!
All welcome!

Don't miss next week's seminar on Trans Pregnancy and Childbirth!

Welcome to our last Gender Research Seminar this semester, where Ruth Pearce from the University of Glasgow talks about experiences, needs, and perspectives of trans birth parents from a trans feminist perspective.

4 JUNE, 14.15-16.00
Centre for Gender Research

ABOUT THE SEMINAR:
The figure of the “pregnant man” has been the subject of extensive hyperbole and moral panic. These portrayals contrast greatly with the grounded materiality of trans parents’ lives. The reality is that many trans men and non-binary people are born with a uterus and ovaries. They are therefore potentially capable of conceiving, carrying, and giving birth to a child.

This talk will look broadly at the experiences, needs, and perspectives of trans birth parents from a trans feminist perspective. It will draw on findings from across two studies which together engaged with over a hundred individuals: the international, qualitative Trans Pregnancy project (2017-2021), and the mixed-methods English research project Improving Trans Experiences of Maternity Services (2020-2021). Key topics will include pathways to conception, the role of perinatal services, the impact of hormone use, pregnancy loss, gender-based violence, and discourses of fatness.

With more trans people giving birth every year, this talk will emphasise the importance of centring lived experience rather than sensationalism. In contrast to commentaries that seek to pit the needs of women and trans people against one another, it will argue for collaboration across shared interests, transforming both social discourse and service provision for all mothers, all fathers, all parents.

Don't miss the Gender Research Seminar with Kata Kyrölä tomorrow, 28 May!

Welcome to our next Gender Research Seminar, where Kata Kyrölä explores q***r Sámi sensibilities in contemporary cinema.

28 May, 14.15-16.00 at the Centre for Gender Research
All welcome!

Abstract:
This talk is a journey through my research project about q***r Sámi sensibilities in contemporary cinema and media, and the ways in which the trauma of settler colonialism, including the traumatic repression of gender and sexual diversity, haunts the popular imagination. I will propose that q***r Indigenous theories can expand our understanding of gender and sexuality overall through notions of (non)sovereign erotics, non-human kinship, and desire. These concepts are mobilized through analysis of two film examples, the immensely popular animated children film Frozen II (2019), produced in collaboration with a board of Sámi experts, and the Swedish fantasy-horror-romance movie Border (Gräns, 2018), about two trolls passing as humans, falling in love, and reckoning with a past and present of persecution. While these films may not necessarily appear to be about q***r, trans, Indigeneous or Sámi themes at the first glance, hopefully by the end of talk, they will appear so to you, as they have come to appear to me.

Dr. Kata Kyrölä is an Associate Professor in Media Studies at the department of Culture, Communication and Media, University College London, and Docent in Gender Studies and Media Studies at the University of Turku, Finland.
