Liking something in Italian is weird🫪🇮🇹

In English, I like you = I like you.

But in Italian, the verb "piacere", which is the verb that expresssa a liking, actually means "to be liked by". The verb "to like" doesn't exist in that direct form.

You can't say "to piaccio" to say I like you, how you would with "ti amo".

To say I like you, you have to say 

"Mi piaci" which literally means you are liked by me.

It’s you being liked — not me doing the liking.

Example:
• Mi piace il gelato = Ice cream is pleasing to me (= I like ice cream)
• Ti piaccio? = Do you like me?
