KG Cup Final Motion: THW accept high school applications based on lottery

Majority Adjudicators' Rationale for the call: "During the course of the debate, both teams conceded that socioeconomic background was the predominant factor in creating the gap between high and low scoring students. This premise became the backdrop for a clash over the nature of fairness. Proposition argued for a model that would seek to correct the disadvantage of students from unmotivated backgrounds by exposing underprivileged students to different environments. Opposition asserted that an arbitrary allotment of high school slots was as unfair as the socioeconomic disadvantage in the first place, with emphasis on the disregard for privileged student’s efforts and potential harms to their classroom environments. The proposition brought the analytical support for the Rawlsian world view concerning the disadvantages of the random nature of the birth lottery, while mitigating the harms to privileged students by pointing out that they would still receive support from their home environments. This placed opposition’s arguments in a setting where the harms coming from opposition were weighed less heavily compared to the benefits gained to the majority on proposition. Six out of seven judges on the panel were thus convinced to give the win to proposition."

-Aline Fleetwood, representative for the majority opinion
