On April 27th, thirty adventurous students and their dedicated teachers embarked on a
memorable journey to Berlin. This Erasmus-funded project focused on the threats to
democratic institutions and the alarming rise of authoritarian regimes.
During the trip, all students visited Sachsenhausen, a concentration camp established in
1936—the same year Germany hosted the Olympics. There, they had the opportunity to
meet and connect with students from Berlin Brandenburg International School.
Another highlight saw the Visual Arts students collaborating with peers from the Nelson
Mandela International School, fostering creativity and cultural exchange.
Meanwhile, the History and Literature students immersed themselves in a five-hour
workshop at the Topography of Terror. Through hands-on engagement with primary
sources, they deepened their understanding of the mechanisms behind authoritarian
control. This experience was further enriched by an additional workshop at the German
Resistance Museum, where they explored the courageous efforts of German citizens
who resisted National Socialist domination.
One memorable highlight of the trip was a walking tour through Berlin, led by TOK
teacher extraordinaire Karl. He guided us through the city's monuments, discussing how
collective memory and history are constructed through architecture and other public
memorials. He was so informative, we even picked up random people on the street who
wanted to hear what he had to say!
