Back in the good old days. About 22 years ago, when ESN had recently opened as one of the first bilingual independent schools in Stockholm.

Chess used to be an important part of ESNs profile.
Appreciated 4th grade teacher Mr. Aaron Nussbaum started the "Schack 4:an" project at ESN shortly after the school was founded in 1992. The teachers and the PTA helped form a tradition of participating in this uplifting and self-esteem building event, which was continued by ESNs beloved former principal, Mr. Mark Jesinkey.
This video from Schack 4:an, on one of the occassions when ESN won the trophé, shows one of the reasons why chess was so important to the devolopment of ESNs students. Chess has been proven to develop problem-solving skills in those who practice it. It is however, important to note that winning is not the focus of Schack 4:an, but PARTICIPATING, is. Team-building and camaraderie are the pillars of this event.
Those of us who participated will never forget the incredible atmosphere of friendship and motivation that was experienced.
Every year, under the previous owner, Joan Wohlner, ESN used to participate in Schack 4:an, a national chess tournament for 4th graders in Sweden. This tournament was done in such a way that every student in the class helped the team. The students loved it and ESN did very well, becoming national champions many times.
This page is a tribute to the previous owner of Engelska Skolan Norr: Joan Wohlner. She created a school of with students from all parts of the world who studied the Swedish curriculum in English and where a guiding concept was tolerance and acceptance.
There was a high level of job security, a high level of teacher influence and a lot of the budget spent on materials. It was the first independent school in Sweden to have its own full time nurse and library, with a librarian. A lot of resources were put in to student care.
The school took pride in excellent academic results, achieved by its students through the highly professional guidance of its teachers.
