POV: someone asks what we did this summer and I don’t know where to start 😂🌍

Sweden, Germany, Italy, Spain, France, Norway… and somehow there’s still more to come.

We packed a LOT into this summer, but the quick clips don’t even begin to tell the stories behind these places.

I’ll be sharing more of what we saw, what surprised us, what the kids loved, and what living and traveling abroad is teaching us about childhood, learning, culture, and the way people do life around the world.

Moving to Sweden has changed our family in ways I didn’t really expect.🇺🇸✈️🇸🇪✨

We notice the little things more.
We spend more time outside.
We’ve gotten braver and more willing to try new things.
We walk WAY more.
We’re on our phones less.

But one of the biggest changes has been realizing how fast I was moving before.

I didn’t really notice it in the U.S. because that pace felt normal. Here, I’ve been reminded that it’s okay to slow down. To sit and enjoy your coffee. To take the long walk. To notice the weather. To spend time together without needing to rush to the next thing.

I thought moving countries would change where we lived. I didn’t realize how much it would change our family unit for the better, too. 🤍🇸🇪

Were YOU a Bobby? Did you know a Bobby? Or was Bobby your student? 👀😂

Some kept asking how this German playground could possibly be considered “unsafe”…

So naturally, I put on my American public school teacher anxiety hat and introduced you to Little Bobby. 😂

Because there is always that one child who can look at a perfectly reasonable playground and somehow find the one possibility no adult planned for.

Climb it backwards? Bobby.
Jump from the wrong side? Bobby.
Turn something harmless into a potential incident report? Also Bobby. 😅

And yes…Little Bobby is inspired by my dad as a child.

But watch this one all the way to the end, because Bobby’s story is also why I think we have to be careful about how quickly we label children.

Behind the “wild,” “difficult,” “naughty,” or impulsive child may be a story we know absolutely nothing about.

Bobby experienced significant childhood trauma. His dad passed away. His home life was complicated. And underneath all of that behavior was also an incredibly bright little boy whose giftedness wouldn’t be recognized until later.

So before we only ask:

“How do we stop this behavior?”

Maybe we also ask:

“What is this child trying to communicate?”

Because behavior gives us information.

Sometimes the child who requires the most redirection is also the child who most needs an adult willing to look beyond the behavior and ask why. ❤️
