Born on April 9, 1906, Victor Vasarely was a pioneering force behind kinetic and optical art, creating works that seem to move through the interplay of geometric forms and vibrant color.

Influenced by Bauhaus principles and later based in Paris, he developed a visual language built on repetition and abstraction, designed to challenge perception and engage the viewer’s eye. His work could be both mesmerizing and disorienting, dividing audiences while redefining modern art.

At the height of his career in the 1960s and 70s, Vasarely brought his vision beyond the gallery into public space and popular culture, even collaborating with David Bowie. His belief that art should be accessible to all continues to shape his enduring legacy.

Five works by Gabriella Crespi lead the highlights in Blomqvist’s International Modern themed auction, closing 17 March.

Created between 1972 and 1975, the “Rising Sun” series marks a turning point in Crespi’s practice. Bamboo replaces polished metal, introducing warmth and material depth to her geometric forms. The series remains one of her most sought-after bodies of work and a defining chapter in Italian post-war design.

All five pieces are authenticated by the Archivio Gabriella Crespi and come from a private Norwegian collection, acquired in New York in the 1970s.
