Orri Stefánsson: "Desperate countries could see geoengineering as their last option".

Geoengineering was a major topic on the Swedish news program Aktuellt on the 21st of November. Orri Stefánsson was interviewed about the risk of countries taking drastic measures to mitigate the consequences of climate change, such as dispersing sulfar into the stratosphere to block light from the sun.

“If we don’t greatly reduce emissions, ountries that already suffer from climate change, such as Bangladesh and India, might sooner or later think that this is their last option. And the fact is that that this technology is quite cheap compared to everything else we can do to combat climate change. And they can definetily afford it”.

The world faces global coordination failures that can result in catastrophes like wars, famines, and pandemics.

Anders Sandberg held a research seminar at the Institute for Futures Studies to argue that law acts as a "natural intelligence singleton," a distributed system that promotes societal regularity and solves complex coordination issues.

However, AI's advancement might create systems that either undermine human control or lead humans to willingly surrender their autonomy, potentially compromising human well-being and independence.

As the catastrophic effects of climate change become increasingly apparent, some people are turning to the idea of 'geoengineering' as a potential remedy – meaning interventions in the Earth's natural systems to mitigate or counteract these effects. Others find the whole idea dangerous and could undermine efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The Institute for Futures Studies published an interview with Orri Stefánsson about the ethics and politics of geoengineering:

"If emissions don't significantly decrease in the coming years and more areas are affected by climate change, it's not unlikely that some state or group of states might feel desperate enough to try it. If we succeed in reducing carbon dioxide emissions, it would take decades to see the effects, but according to some models, geoengineering could lower the average temperature in just a few months. That makes it a politically tempting idea."
