The Puzzle of Ineffective Altruism: A Lunch Lecture with Stefan Schubert (LSE).
People give to charity and volunteer for good causes on a massive scale. But unfortunately, most of their efforts are not as effective as they could be. Most people are not, for instance, giving to the charities that do the most good per dollar. In a forthcoming book, my colleague Lucius Caviola and I try to explain why. We show that many obstacles stand in the way of effective altruism, including the normative view that charitable donors should give with their heart even if that reduces effectiveness, biases like opportunity cost neglect and scope neglect, and misconceptions about which charities are most effective.
Stefan Schubert is a researcher at the Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Science, London School of Economics and Political Science, working in the intersection of moral psychology and philosophy. Stefan focuses on psychological questions of relevance to effective altruism, such as why our altruistic actions are often ineffective, and why we don't invest more in safe-guarding our common future. He also have previously worked at University of Oxford and the Centre for Effective Altruism.
Stefan set up the Swedish Network for Evidence-Based Policy, and has developed tools alongside clearerthinking.org, including argument-checking of opinion pieces and political debates.
