Participated in International Days at the University of Strasbourg
Together with a student who has participated in Kyushu University's exchange program, I hosted the Japan booth and promoted study opportunities in Japan. Great chance to share experiences and encourage international exchange.
Special thanks to the International Relations Office Team at the University of Strasbourg for the kind invitation and warm welcome. It was a pleasure to exchange ideas on how to promote study abroad in France for KYUSHU students — truly an enriching and inspiring experience!

Two students from 九州大学 Kyushu University Medical Technology are visiting the Department of Laboratory Medicine at Karolinska Institutet this week.
This short- study program, which began as a pilot last year, is now being coordinated by Dr. Veronika Tillander. This year’s program is packed with enriching experiences, including numerous lab tours, laboratory practice, and classroom participation.
During free time, a student support group at Karolinska has been kindly attending to the two students, introducing them to Swedish culture and daily life, and taking them to the city center. This group also hosted exchange events when our students visited Karolinska last year.
Looking ahead, we hope to welcome Karolinska students to our university as part of a continued effort to foster mutual exchange. Discussions among coordinators are already underway to make this a reality.
Many thanks to Dr.Veronika, KI researchers, and KI students!!

🎓 Kyushu University Alumni Gathering in Gothenburg 🇸🇪
九州大学 Kyushu University established its Stockholm Liaison Office in 2020, and we’ve been fortunate to receive continuous support from our alumni community in Sweden. To express our gratitude, we recently hosted a small gathering in Gothenburg with eight alumni joining us for a delightful evening of connection and conversation.
🤝 We hope this event sparked new networks among our alumni and strengthened ties with Kyushu University. For those who couldn’t attend due to distance, we look forward to welcoming you at a future gathering!
Thank you for your ongoing support of Kyushu University🙌

🌍 EAIE Week in Sweden – Reconnecting & Exploring New Horizon
Last week, a delegation from 九州大学 Kyushu University, including Vice Presindet Natalie Konomi, visited Sweden to attend the EAIE conference in Gothenburg. It was a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with old friends from over 20 institutions and to explore exciting new possibilities with colleagues we met for the first time.
We also had the pleasure of joining Stockholm Partner Day, hosted by Stockholm University and KTH Royal Institute of Technology as well as the Pre-EAIE Meet-up at Uppsala University. Each event offered meaningful conversations and valuable insights. In between these events, we also visited University of Gothenburg, a member of the MIRAI consortium, which brings together 17 universities from Japan and Sweden.
While online meetings have become the norm, these in-person gatherings reminded us of the unique power of face-to-face interaction—where spontaneous conversations can spark genuine connections and new collaborations.
Thank you to everyone who made this week so memorable!

Last year, the Medical Technology course at Kyushu University’s School of Medicine piloted a study abroad program with the Karolinska Institutet(KI). Among KI students who warmly hosted four KYUSHU students in Sweden, one is considering studying at a Japanese university and recently visited the Department of Pathology and Division of Medical Technology at KYUSHU.
What’s even more inspiring is how the connections built through the program have continued to flourish. Besides, two KYUSHU students who plan to visit KI this fall have met him in person, taking this opportunity. Friendships are growing across borders. This experience reminds us that a single student program can become a powerful and life-changing event.

Last December, Kyushu University hosted a workshop for RENKEI, the Japan-UK university consortium project. This time, from May 6-9, Newcastle University and Durham University in North-East England organized the RENKEI Just Transitions workshop for early career researchers (ECRs), bringing together around 70 participants.
Kyushu University was represented by Vice President Natalie Konomi, Associate Professor Motonori Watanabe from I2CNER, and doctoral student Ryusei Kunisaki from the Graduate School of Engineering. Participants were divided into several groups to train in developing grant proposals alongside researchers from various fields. Vice President Konomi provided feedback on the proposals as a panelist, while Professor Watanabe served as a group moderator. Through this program, participants not only learned how to create interdisciplinary research proposals but also built connections that we hope will continue in the future.
During the program, we were delighted to reconnect with Professor Andrew Smallbone, a former postdoctoral researcher in mechanical engineering at Kyushu University. Additionally, Professor Watanabe held individual meetings with researchers at Durham University to explore potential research collaborations. I hope this meeting will lead to fruitful collaborative research in the future.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the British Council, Newcastle University, and Durham University for their tremendous efforts in preparing the workshop.
Next year, Japanese universities will host the RENKEI workshop, and I look forward to welcoming you to Japan!
