The Death of an Explorer — a Virtual Film Production
Novia University of Applied Sciences in Jakobstad, Finland, and the Visual Magic VFX program in Skellefteå collaborated this fall on a rapid virtual production project. The goal was to create a trailer for Andreas Westerberg’s short film script, The Death of an Explorer.
The film is set on a 15th-century ship, and the production involved greenscreen filming at Campus Allegro in Jakobstad, with digital post-production completed at Visual Magic in Skellefteå to recreate the film’s historical setting. The entire production process, from filming to final delivery, took four weeks and concluded with a presentation during the industry days at the Umeå Film Festival in late November.
The main purpose of the project was to dive into a real film production incorporating significant digital post-production elements. Key takeaways include understanding how crucial preparation is to ensure a smooth process, from cameras and lighting to props. This has been a challenging but highly educational project for everyone involved.
The project was carried out with the support of the Interreg project Borderless Game Academy and the Leader project Filmpool Ostrobothnia.

Sustainability in the Games and Creative Industries
One of the primary goals of the Borderless Game Academy project is to highlight sustainability and transformation within the games and creative industries.
This fall, we conducted a series of digital lectures and discussions for students and teachers. The aim was to provide insight into broader issues and how the industry addresses these topics.
Themes like social sustainability and diversity were recurring in several presentations. Among the speakers were Important Looking Pirates, who emphasized the importance of good working conditions for designers and production staff, and Elina Sievänen from the Finnish Women’s Organization Federation’s project We in Games. Sievänen shared insights from their study on Finnish game studios and their games, focusing on equality, character representation, and gender-based violence.
Feedback from students indicates that almost all see this as an important issue, but many find it challenging to understand how they can make a difference in the workplace.
From the project's perspective, this has been a significant focus area. It has been fascinating to listen and discuss how the industry views these challenges. However, this is a vast subject, and it is challenging to take a comprehensive approach, which is why we are eager to delve further into the topic.

We are proud to present the examination projects from the students who started their education in 2022! For around 6½ weeks the students planned out and carried out said plan in order to create a piece which represents something they'd like to delve deeper into.
The students will now enter internships for 20 weeks in the fall and graduate from Visual Magic around new years if all goes well. We are very grateful to have had these talented individuals as our students so far!
