Paraje Calificado: Cava's Grand Cru
There are currently 15 wines in the world that carry this distinction. 15.
The gold rhomboid with a lowercase "p" — Paraje Calificado — is D.O. Cava's most exclusive category. Not just long-aged sparkling wine. Something fundamentally different.
Every Paraje Calificado must come 100% from a single qualified estate. The sub-zone must be named on the label. The wine must pass independent tasting panels composed of Masters of Wine and senior sommeliers. Every bottle must receive individual approval from the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture.
And the aging? The minimum is 36 months. But look at what's actually on the market:
Juvé & Camps La Capella: 150+ months. Ferrer Wines Can Sala: 144 months. Pere Ventura Can Bas: 96+ months.
Some of these wines have been aging longer than your current phone, laptop, and probably your car. Combined. 😅
This is Cava's answer to Champagne's Grand Cru — and most people have never heard of it.
Now you have. 🔍🍾
