Our autumn exhibition, Tremble, opens Friday 25 September, 18–23.
In conjunction with Malmö Gallery Weekend.

The exhibition features works by Alberta Whittle, Felix Gmelin and Frida Orupabo.

ALBERTA WHITTLE (b. 1980, Bridgetown, Barbados) lives and works in Glasgow, Scotland, received her PhD from Edinburgh College of Art in 2024 and is a current Research Associate at The University of Johannesburg. Alberta represented Scotland at the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia (2022) and has been a recipient of the Paul Hamlyn Awards for Artists, Turner Bursary, Frieze Artist Award, and a Henry Moore Foundation Artist Award. Alberta was the Margaret Tait Award winner for 2018/19.

Alberta’s multifaceted practice is preoccupied with developing a personal response to the legacies of the Atlantic slave trade, unpicking its connections to institutional racism, white supremacy and climate emergency in the present. Against an oppressive political background Alberta aims to foreground hope and engage with different forms of resistance.

Please join us for the opening of our autumn exhibition Tremble, in conjunction with Malmö Gallery Weekend!

‘The earth is trembling’, observed Martinique-born writer and thinker, Édouard Glissant. The exhibition takes off from here, presenting works by three artists, Alberta Whittle, Felix Gmelin, and Frida Orupabo. In this world of unrest and friction, it asks how resistance takes form, moves, and persists over time. Embracing a Glissantian approach it accepts the ongoing rumbling as a matter of fact, and presses on what it means to live, think, and act within it.

Frida Orupabo’s nine-channel video installation glares at the viewer in a constant loop. She reworks constructions of Black subjectivity through archival imagery, creating a universe of both discomfort and release. Alberta Whittle’s What Sound Does The Black Atlantic Make? (2019) unravels the colonial legacy of the North British Rubber Company, turning towards the ocean as a site of memory. At the heart of Felix Gmelin’s Farbtest, Die Rote Fahne II (2002) is the question: Can a political gesture be inherited? Gmelin uses reenactment to examine former political movements, particularly traces of 1960s radicalism.
Tremble tethers itself in anti-imperial thought, reaching for potentiality through artistic gesture.

Skånes konstförening is happy to announce that Adrian-Alicia Bisell Gonzalez is this year’s recipient of the Sven and Ellida Hjort Exhibition Grant!

Beyond a stipend of SEK 25 000, the award includes an exhibition at Skånes konstförening opening in February 2027.

The jury’s statement:
Adrian-Alicia Bisell Gonzalez is awarded the Sven and Ellida Hjort Exhibition Grant for a practice that brings together material integrity and technical skill with conceptual precision. Their work pushes against, and literally pierces, the boundaries that define and restrict our physical spaces and immaterial existence. Though initially appearing menacing, the sculptures which balance on biomorphic joints and sharp spikes create a state of delicate suspension. Bisell Gonzalez's work puts the viewer in a state of caution and curiosity, existing in the tension between flexibility and force which allows it to puncture the softest parts of ourselves. Skånes konstförening looks forward with great anticipation to an exhibition where Bisell Gonzalez’s distinct and poetic material approach engages with local histories and myths.

About the artist:
Adrian-Alicia Bisell Gonzalez (b. 1998) works with sculpture and installation. Form-making is used as a method for turning towards and questioning the structures and institutions that surround the body. Material and architecture are understood as being in constant motion, while the frequently recurring steel carries histories of the past and of transformation. By working with what remains hidden, what lies beyond the gaze or behind one’s back, Bisell Gonzalez examines the boundaries that define our reality. Bisell Gonzalez is based in Malmö and holds a BFA from Malmö Art Academy. Previous exhibitions include Yield to Touch, Gerdman Gallery (SE); We Do Not Work Alone, Malmö Art Academy (SE); and Forårsudstillingen, Charlottenborg (DK).

Max Ockborn (b.1983) has established himself as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Swedish sculpture. Through a slow, material-oriented process, he builds works from collected and found materials – wood, acrylic compound, silicone, glue, and more. These materials are gradually brought together to form sculptural works that exist somewhere between figures and objects, the human, the animal, and something less defined.

The artist talk is organised by KONSTITORI, a platform for public encounters with artists who use food and edible materials as a medium, material, or subject matter.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in June for Ville Laurinkiski's performance and talk: Les voyages et aventures extraordinaires du frère Angelo.

With the poignant musical in one act, Laurinkoski activated his installation, presented as part of the exhibition, Object of Devotion. The work comprised a series of grey locker-room benches alongside a sound piece in which the Finnish youth hymn Evankeliumi was looped relentlessly against live readings, confronting systemic clichés of salvation.

The performance title is borrowed from the novel of the same name by the late French writer, philosopher, and gay liberation theorist Guy Hocquenghem (1946–88). The novel allegorises the AIDS epidemic through Christian imagery.

During the summer, Skånes konstförening presents a series of workshops at Sevedsplan Summer Square in connection with the Seved festival. In collaboration with Red Cross, Fryshuset and MKB with support from Malmö Stad. The summer square in Seved is installed from June to September.

Max Ockborn (b. 1983) is a Malmö-based artist holding an MFA in Fine Arts as well as a Master's degree in Critical and Educational Studies from Malmö Art Academy. Although his practice is primarily sculptural, it also encompasses text, video, and sound.

KONSTITORI will serve carrot cake and coffee, on the house. Free admission.
The event will be held in Swedish.
