Dear all,

Meet Lina Jankauskaite, another of our stand-out learners who - to our delight - have agreed to share his story with you all!

“I have taken the European Business Law: Competing in Europe course, provided by the Lund University and facilitated by Coursera, because I wanted to, as the saying goes, widen my horizons. I did not have any clear career-orientated goals, I am just generally a curious person who likes to dip their toes in many things. However, after having completed the course, I found myself feeling not only more aware of how the world around me works but also much more confident in my own career. I am a self-employed service provider in a highly competitive market and this course inspired me to further investigate how certain laws apply in my region and within my target market. I certainly feel to have become considerably more literate and have gained erudition that I will be able to apply not only in my professional life but also in a conversation. It may sound strange but I feel somewhat empowered by the knowledge and insight that this course provided me with. It is very well structured, the lecturers are very articulate, the topics are presented in a very lay-person-friendly manner. I especially enjoyed that the laws and regulations that were being taught weren't just discussed in isolation but also how they work together, what weight each carries when several different legislations apply. This course was certainly of immense value for me in both the knowledge and the confidence.“

EU threatens legal action against the UK — again — over Northern Ireland deal 04/03/2021

After years of negotiating Brexit, an agreement could be made. Although the Great Britain has managed to leave the European Union there are still some uncertainties mainly regarding the freedom of goods and workers. As an example read the article attached below.

What do you think will be the biggest issue for the Union to solve regarding the aftermath of Brexit?

EU threatens legal action against the UK — again — over Northern Ireland deal The EU is threatening new legal action against the U.K. over differences on their post-Brexit arrangements.

Dear all,

Meet Turan Kocakaya, another of our stand-out learners who - to our delight - have agreed to share his story with you all!

"I have graduated from Faculty of Law of Ankara University in 2018. After that, I worked as an legal trainee for a year. I also passed the trademark attorney exam of Turkish Patent and Trademark Office and became a Trademark Attorney in February 2020. I am now practicing lawyer since December 2019 and trademark attorney since February 2020. I decided to take the European Business Law courses because I would like to be able to provide international legal services, especially IP related.

I took the last course (Competing in Europe) first in 2018 via scholarship from Coursera. I was freshly graduated from law school and was a legal trainee at that time. I was familiar with EU intellectual property law but not EU business law; therefore I would like to understand how the EU business law works. I loved the way courses are conducted and professionals' perspective at the end of each week.

I did not have the financial capacity to take the first two courses, but then I saw the cooperation of Ankara University and Coursera which offers free enrollment and certification to students of Ankara University. I immediately contacted the Ankara University and enrolled in the first two courses.

It was a pleasure for me to get some insights on EU law and its relationship with local law systems, professionals' perspectives, and practical tips.

The courses haven’t had any impact on my current career, but I am adding the certificates to my CV while I am applying for EU jobs. I hope that I will get an opportunity to work in the EU in the future."

We are always interested in learning about how our courses and our specialization is impacting people and whether it has been helpful. Hoping that their stories can inspire future learners, we will therefore publish a series of learner stories here on Facebook during the next couple of weeks.

First, meet Vinayakan Aiyer - one of our stand-out specialization learners, whose initiative inspired this project!

"I have a background in hospitality industry, international business, and corporate travel management. The three fields are interlinked yet somewhat distinct from each other.

I have studied hotel law and international law that governs shipping (incoterms), but I do not have an extensive academic base in commercial law. In my line of work, I have dealt with commercial contracts extensively during the last ten years. Much to my surprise, I could interpret the legal clauses like a professionally trained lawyer, and I have even suggested tweaking contract language to my company’s legal team. Still, I was very aware of my academic gap in the field of law.

I like to constantly pursue intellectual growth and it is important for me to feel challenged with new learnings. In my line of work, workload drops significantly in the month of December every year. Due to COVID, I knew I would not be on holiday travel in 2020. I wanted to use the holiday time to learn a field of study that I did not know a lot about. Specialization in European Business Law was scary for a start but just the way the course was laid out with respect to lectures, practitioner interviews, quizzes, and assignments, I could readily apply and rapidly learn. It simply was a leap of faith.

To be clear, one can’t pass this specialization without understanding the modules well. One must put in the effort, but the learnings are truly enriching. I found the course so interesting that I finished the course within thirty days (Coursera recommends five months for this specialization).

I am looking at completing the AI & Law course next on Lund University’s Coursera/MOOC by April 2021. There is a good chance I may apply for European and International Trade and Tax Law - Master's Programme at Lund sometime in future. I certainly look forward to it with much enthusiasm."

New year – new course!

We would like to take the opportunity to share with you a project that we have been working on during the last 1,5 years; together with associate professor Valentin Jeutner and senior lecturer Ana Nordberg at the Faculty of Law and a number of other inspiring instructors we have developed a new Lund University MOOC course called AI and Law.

The course will give you a basic understanding of how artificial intelligence impacts different areas of society and law. The lectures cover a wide array of topics, ranging from the basics of AI software and hardware and what legal issues these dimensions raise, to the use of CCTV in criminal investigations. Furthermore, the course examines a number of future challenges connected to artificial intelligence within various fields of law.

Today we are very happy to announce that the lectures are all recorded and the material is uploaded to Coursera. This means that you soon will be able to participate in the most interesting learning experience of 2021!

If you are interested in taking this course, follow our page https://www.facebook.com/aimooc/ to be the first to sign up when it launches!

Dear all,

The European Union is one of the world's largest and most important economies. As you may know, the UK has left the European Union earlier this year. This raises a lot of questions and problems yet to be resolved before the transition period ends. In this article you can read about one of them.

What other questions needs answers before the transition period ends, do you think?

We know that many of you have made your way to this page and we therefore want to thank you for enrolling to our courses. We hope that you have found our courses useful and enlightening.

Best regards,

Your MOOC team at the Faculty of Law, Lund University
