Today, Elien van Dongen held her midway seminar and answered the following questions:
1. How do we measure ”surname status inequality” and “surname status persistence”?
2. What do surname status inequality and surname status persistence look like for the full Swedish population over all birth cohorts 1820-1985? Levels and changes over time
3. How do “surname status persistence” of surname groups and individual surnames relate to each other? What does within-group and between-group mobility look like?
Thank you for a very interesting seminar with many great comments from the audience divided with 24 people at Zoom and 13 people in the room.

Today our PhD student Marcos Castillo held a seminar titled “The Land of Opportunity? Returns to migration for Swedish migrants during the Age of Mass Migration”
• Over a million Swedes migrated to the US during the Age of Mass Migration (1860-1930)
• In 1900, returns seem to be mostly driven by higher wages in the US, not by occupational changes
Thank you for a great seminar!

Wonderful to see so many people at the fourth Lund Population Day, both in person and joining digitally!
The breadth of research at Lund University with relevance to this year’s theme “Big Microdata and Population Research” was exemplified when listening to today’s interesting presentations from researchers at all three faculties represented at the Centre. To top it off, we were graced with the digital presence of keynote speaker Steven Ruggles who took us on a mind-boggling journey through the amazing technological advances in data storage and the remarkable history of IPUMS.
A big thank you to all who contributed to making LPD 2021 a memorable event! Hope to see you next year!
