We are happy to announce a call for papers for the next issue of the Asia in Focus journal—published by the Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies, Lund University—with a planned publication date in early summer 2027.

Asia in Focus is an open access journal for early-career academics writing in fields within the Social sciences and Humanities (excluding linguistics and languages). We accept original manuscripts from authors affiliated with or recently affiliated with a university within the Nordic region.

What can debates on Chinese social media tell us about the future of global politics?

In this open lecture, Associate Professor Chenchen Zhang (Durham University) presents insights from her work on how ideas of "the West" and China-West differences are constructed and mobilised in contemporary Chinese political discourse.

Moving from intellectual history to today's fast-moving digital culture, Zhang explores the rise of reactionary online formations, racial nationalism, authoritarianism, and backlash against social justice movements. Her research also examines how anti-colonial language can sometimes be mobilised not for emancipatory purposes, but to reinforce state power and legitimise exclusion and violence.

At a time when liberal political orders are increasingly contested around the world, this lecture offers an opportunity to reflect on the political ideas shaping our present moment.

Following Zhang’s presentation, the discussion will open into an interactive exchange with Jinyan Zeng, affiliated researcher at the Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies at Lund University, as interlocutor.
