Between God and State: Iran after a long 20th century. A conversation with Rouzbeh Parsi 01/04/2026

Welcome to a conversation with historian and Middle East expert Rouzbeh Parsi on his new book Mellan Gud och stat. Iran efter ett långt 1900-tal (title in English: Between God and State. Iran after a long 20th century.)

Wednesday 8 April, 16.15-17.30, at LUX, Helgonavägen 3. Läsesalen, on the ground floor, just off the foyer.

Discussant: Lisa Strömbom. Moderator: Lena Halldenius

In his new book on the history of Iran, historian Rouzbeh Parsi notes that the question of what kind of society Iran should be has characterised the country's 20th-century history and is common to all societies around the world that underwent radical modernisation during the last century. While USA and Israel are attacking Iran in a highly volatile Middle East, this remains an open question. The 1978-79 revolution set Iran on its current course, but it would be naive to conclude that the old society was thereby destroyed and replaced by entirely new dogmas, ideas and norms.

Rouzbeh Parsi will introduce, followed by a discussion with Lisa Strömbom, Peace and Conflict scholar and Assistant Director of the Centre for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies (CMES). Moderator is Lena Halldenius, Coordinator of Lund University's Human Rights Profile Area.

The event is in English. The book is in Swedish, but an edited version of the epilogue in English is available on the Human Rights Blogg, which is linked in the events page here.

Today is Human Rights Day, marking the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We are at MR-dagarna and celebrated by co-hosting a seminar this morning – together with the Raoul Wallenberg Institute, on the future of humanitarian law. On the panel was Peter Lundberg, Director of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute; Ulrika Modeer, Secretary General of the Swedish Red Cross; Rouzbeh Parsi, Middle East expert affiliated with Lunds universitet, and – moderating – Lena Halldenius, professor and coordinator of the the Human Rights Profile Area at Lund University. The challenges are enormous, but some take aways are: hold politicians to account, start locally, build resources for systematic data gathering, mobilize around what works, and be realistic without losing hope.

Welcome to a research seminar on digital justice! We are happy to welcome Victoria Adelmant to our research seminar in Human Rights Studies. Victoria is Director of the Digital Welfare State Project at NYU School of Law. At the seminar, she will present on "Global Perspectives on Digitalised Welfare". All are welcome!

Around the world, serious harm has emerged from digitalised welfare systems. In Australia, the so-called ‘Robodebt’ system, designed to detect fraud among welfare applications, resulted in serious errors, with tens of thousands falsely accused of fraud. In the Netherlands an algorithmic system erroneously accused tens of thousands of individuals of welfare fraud, leading to distress and destitution. The similarities are striking—in different parts of the world, government agencies have deployed almost identical systems in the welfare sphere, without legal safeguards nor adequate institutional oversight. But still, lessons are not being learned. Where government agencies consider developing and deploying an algorithmic welfare tool, they rarely (if ever) look to other countries’ experiences.

Human Rights in Global and Colonial Contexts: Scandinavia and Beyond 15/11/2024

Join us on Zoom today for a digital lunch seminar with Joachim Östlund and Mads Jensen, who will present their new research initiative Human Rights in global and colonial contexts: Scandinavia and Beyond.

Date: 15 November at 12:15 – 13:00
Zoom: https://lnkd.in/d6a36HEZ
Open for everybody!

The last decades of the eighteenth century saw an increasing and explicit use of the concept of “human rights”, theoretically and practically, in Scandinavia. This research initiative aims to chart these still largely unknown waters of the political and theoretical uses of human rights discourses in Scandinavia in its global and colonial contexts.

You can read an introductory blog text from Joachim Östlund and Mads Langballe Jensen here: https://humanrights.blogg.lu.se/2024/11/12/human-rights-in-global-and-colonial-contexts-scandinavia-and-beyond/
