The Seed Box

We are an environmental humanities research center based at Linköping University in Sweden. Nature is no longer separable from culture.

The Seed Box is an international research center supporting interdisciplinary, critical, creative, and contemporary environmental humanities research. Our researchers are junior scholars as well as leaders in the field, and our work is informed by integrated social justice, gender, race, and class perspectives. Together in collaboration with citizens and stakeholders, our innovative approaches exp

and the analytical relevance of the humanities and make vital contributions to communities and environments. We are supported by funding from Mistra, the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research; and Formas, the Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences, and Spatial Planning. In this new era some call the Anthropocene, the environment is in us, and we humans are fully in the environment. It is also beyond doubt that sustainability and reasonably equitable prosperity will never be achieved without attention to imagination, values, competing worldviews, anti-colonial justice, feminist ethics and more-than-human politics, emerging histories, possible futures, and alternative ways of telling our environmental stories. Rising to the environmental challenges presented by this situation requires an enlivened field of humanities that includes advanced transdisciplinary research on nature, culture and environment. Responding to such concerns, our form of the environmental (post-)humanities are rethinking the place of humanity in the environment.

🔥 The S*x Ecologies Book 🔥 is the result of a collaborative project between The Seed Box and Kunsthall Trondheim, co-published with The MIT Press.

About this event

To celebrate the launch, join artist Anne Duk Hee Jordan and Kunsthall Trondheim Director Stefanie Hessler for a conversation and film screening of Jordan’s video Ziggy and the Starfish.

Accompanying an eponymous exhibition and public programs, and with contributions by 36 artists and scholars, the publication explores the power of the erotic in human and more-than-human worlds. It presents newly commissioned texts and artworks alongside selected visionary essays exploring the intersections of q***r theory and ecology. Spanning diverse geographies and disciplines including art, environmental humanities, gender studies, science and technology studies, and Indigenous studies, the contributors deconstruct Eurocentric erotophobia and heterosexist and speciesist notions of nature, proposing nothing short of a reconceptualization of human relationships with nature. S*x Ecologies invokes ecological erotics for greater social and environmental justice.

With new contributions by, among others, Katja Aglert, adrienne maree brown, Mel Y. Chen, Léuli Eshrāghi, Jack Halberstam, Stefanie Hessler, Jessie Kleemann, Astrida Neimanis, Marie Helene Pereira, Filipa Ramos, Catriona Sandilands, and Serubiri Moses.
