Food topics are consistently engaging in language classrooms because they are personal, cultural, and universally relevant, but the specific aspect that generates the most authentic conversation varies enormously depending on who is in the room.

We are curious: what food-related discussion topic produces the most genuine and extended conversation in your English classroom?

Is it cultural food traditions, nutrition and health, food waste, or something else entirely?

Tell us below.

This topic's covered in our free 10-lesson food and nutrition course — part of our full SDG library.

Nutrition vocabulary appears frequently in B1 and C1 health and food discussions, and several key words carry pronunciation challenges.

This week, focus on three:
PROTEIN is two syllables with the stress on PROH;
CARBOHYDRATE has four syllables with the main stress on HY; and
FIBRE, in British English, is spelled with re rather than er, though the pronunciation is FY-ber regardless.

When students use these words confidently in speech, discussions about health and food become considerably more natural and wide-ranging.

Which nutrition word causes the most confusion in your classroom?

Part of our free 10-lesson course on food and nutrition, built around the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Steal This Activity: a fifteen-minute food and nutrition discussion task for B1 students.

Ask students to rank five foods from most to least nutritious: white rice, spinach, chicken, chocolate, and oranges.

Give them three minutes to rank individually, then pair up and justify their choices to each other.

Finish with a class discussion about whether nutrition advice changes depending on where in the world you live.

This generates opinion language, comparison structures, and genuine disagreement, because students from different cultural backgrounds often have very different responses to the same foods.

What nutrition topics produce the most discussion in your classroom?

This activity is one lesson from our free 10-lesson course on food and nutrition — every course covers a UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).

Teaching can feel isolated in ways that are hard to explain to people outside the profession.

You are surrounded by students all day and yet the specific experience of being a teacher, the planning, the uncertainty, the tiny wins that no one else notices, is something most people around you do not share.

This community exists because that isolation is real and because connecting with other teachers who understand the job matters. If something here has been useful or made the week a little better, we genuinely want to know.

What has been most valuable to you in this space?

All our lessons are free, grouped into 10-lesson courses, each built around one of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Link in the group to join in.

Steal and Share This Activity: a sustainable cities discussion for B1 and above in twenty minutes.

Mid-term is the point where the initial energy has worn off and the end is not yet visible. Tell a teacher friend!

If this is where you are right now, that is completely normal and you are not behind.

You are exactly where teaching always puts people halfway through a term.
