Join our working papers seminar on 16 May, 02:30-04:00 p.m, with CCD's affiliated researcher Junior Gómez Manresa:
"Equity, diversity and inclusion – challenges in the integration process of young refugees within school settings in Sweden"
Junior Gómez Manresa holds a PhD in complex thinking and is affiliated with CCD. In his talk, he will discuss the challenges in the integration process of young refugees within school settings in Sweden. The increase in the number of refugees has been a growing phenomenon in Swedish society until the spring of 2016. The entry of asylum seekers required integration strategies for the inclusion of these displaced people in their new society. However, were the conditions created for the adequate integration of this group in Sweden, specifically unaccompanied children and young people? I will present some reflections and results from a doctoral study carried out in a municipality in southwest Sweden between 2016 – 2018. Analyzing current integration strategies for newcomer young refugees within school settings was the purpose of the research. Some of the results found in the study were the lack of well-planned local strategies for social inclusion of unaccompanied young refugees, lack of dialogue between adults who worked around the young refugees, xenophobic attitudes and other obstacles which meant a hinder for sociocultural integration of young refugees into Swedish society.
