Online learning has been changing the face of the education system for quite some time. Today, it is an integral aspect, and a popular tool, in the broader landscape of higher education. Learning online can help students hone the technical skills they need on the job. New skills can include the ability to use new software suites, perform in-depth research online, and communicate effectively online in various formats such as discussion boards and teleconferencing. Employers often demand these skills as more and more positions require employees to work remotely. Students can also add new skills to a resume and discuss them during a job interview.

Slashing energy use by over 20%.
The engineers tested their approach on a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system for a complex 100-room building using a three-step process. First, they trained a computer on a "virtual model" built from simple equations that roughly described the building's behavior. Then they fed actual building data (temperature, how long blinds were open, weather conditions, etc.) into the computer, to make the training more accurate. Finally, they let the computer run its reinforcement-learning algorithms to find the best way to manage the HVAC system. Broad applications
This discovery could open up new horizons for machine learning by expanding its use to applications where large fluctuations in operating parameters would have important financial or security costs.

In 2016, a supercomputer beat the world champion in Go, a complicated board game. By using reinforcement learning, a type of artificial intelligence whereby computers train themselves after being programmed with simple instructions. The computers learn from their mistakes and, step by step, become highly powerful. The main drawback of reinforcement learning is that it can't be used in some real-life applications.

The next two of the prominent fields where this was used comes soon over the next couple of days!

For a significant part of her life, Woolf wrote her novels while at “a desk standing about three feet six inches high with a sloping top; it was so high that she had to stand to her work.” Her sister painted standing up, and “This led Virginia to feel that her own pursuit might appear less arduous than that of her sister unless she set matters on a footing of equality.” Proving that nothing can stop a person who is dedicated to his work and goals!

The pandemic didn't solve climate change. As people around the world stayed at home to stop the spread of the coronavirus, greenhouse gas emissions from the energy and transport industries plummeted, dropping to record lows. Recently we learned that massive glaciers are tearing loose from the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets, driven by increasingly high temperatures at the poles, and, in turn, accelerating sea-level rise and posing enormous threats to the millions of people living in coastal areas.

All of these extreme weather events can be linked to global warming, caused by rising levels of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, mainly from humans burning fossil fuels.

If you thought Covid-19 restrictions, like enforced lockdowns and social distancing, would put a lasting dent in our collective carbon footprint and save the world from warming, you were mistaken.

The current crisis due to the pandemic seems to have taught many lessons to humanity. With everything getting affected by the lockdown and the spread of the highly contagious virus, educational institutions have been locked up indefinitely. However, technology has been providing the sliver of hope in these unprecedented times.
