{ Intrinsic motivation, math and the opportunity of education } 15 year old Archisman Das shares his perspectives on learning, school, education and - infinity

🔹Today’s guest is one of the learners, students we met on our path as learner guides of international education.

🔹The one thing that stood out with him already as a 9 year old was his brilliant math and coding skills.

🔹In this episode we have a conversation with him about intrinsic motivation and what impact it has in a young person’s life!

🔹We unbox what was driving him in the early years when it came to math and coding, and what is driving him now.

🔹We were curious about what motivates Archisman to come to Hetch ( Helsingborg Tech Hub ) on an afternoon after school!

🔹We discuss innovation and how age doesn’t matter!

🔹We were eager to know Archisman’s answer to the question: If you could design a school, what would we find? How would content and skills be taught and learnt?

Check out our conversation with Archisman Das, a 15 year old student.

His own words:

🔆My name is Archi and I'm currently 15 years old, and I am a student in the 9th grade at the International School of Helsingborg. I personally enjoy mathematics, computer science, and STEM in general due to the opportunities it offers us, and the way it forms everything in the world. I like to experiment and try out new things in these fields and in general, and am completely self-taught for nearly everything I do. I'm very interested in being able to learn things fast and learn new things, as I see not being able to understand something as a challenge for me. I started going deeper into STEM because of my sudden interest, which only happened about a year ago, but I always had a passion for it. In this episode, I talked a bit about my perspective on mathematics and the ways in which we see it vs the other ways there is to see it, why I became so interested in these kinds of things, and what I believe education should be like today.

{ Check out our new episode of unboxED where we talk to Drew Cortese, Director of Global Partnerships at AEON Learning Sciences formerly at Avenues The World School Online Education Innovation, NewYork, USA. }

🎙️🎙️Recorded in June 2024 at HETCH

-A sense of belonging, being part of a team, a tribe is so important for us! Drew Cortese spent many years in the arts and he said that art saved him, and allowed him to create a broader definition of himself.

He brings in that transformational approach to education and asks his students the key question:

- Do you know what a hundred percent of you means?

He points out that transformation takes time and makes the analogy to the place where he lives, Brooklyn, NY. It takes time and effort to seemingly effortlessly glide the streets of New York!

Drew was in the founding team, 13 years ago, when AEON opened their doors to students, and they had a remarkable 760 students on day 1!

Today, students in 46 different different countries are acquiring an AEON education as we speak. The program attracts talent; both students and educators and it’s an exciting, open environment, a community that got tired of an old school system that didn’t serve them anylonger. -Classrooms tend to look like they did 30 years ago? Why?

At AEON students put their knowledge and insights into action, learning is more hybrid and agile, it’s inclusive.

When students have the possibility to also learn online, the introvert students have a place to blossom!

Online was implemented by design at AEON, not by circumstance. The concepts of place and space opens up new possibilities for learning from everywhere!

Drew strongly believes that learning happens when students engage, when they have a chance to explore their potential, and not so much when a teacher is talking.
A teacher teaching is not a guarantee for a student learning.

AEON is a global program and they were initially inspired by the IB but find it a bit old-fashioned for high school.

🫶🫶-We need to take down silos, problem solving is not a one subject thing, it’s transdisciplinary!

We couldn’t agree more! 🤩🤩

❤️❤️Empathy is at the core of school. It has the capacity to change perspectives, and the act of trying to understand another person is powerful!

🙌🏻🙌🏻The thorniest global challenges require collaboration. We let students roll up their sleeves, build capacity, not only write a text but do more, engage in community.

Some of the beauty of learning processes; the one -to -one connection with a student who is making that leap that they didn’t know they had the capacity to make!

{ Claire Evans } We wrapped up this week’s interviews for unboxED with a conversation with amazing Chile-based Claire Evans of School of Humanity. She is kind, knowledgeable and innovative. We loved THE WAY she was sharing her experiences with innovative learning.

When hearing about the online school ‘School of Humanity’ there is one word coming up; POSSIBILITY.

This online school is redefining the concept of school. The world is changing and schools need to change with it! SoH truly paves the way for new narratives about what school can be. It can be in so many ways. Most narratives are human made. When things don’t work anylonger we can change them.

This episode will be one you will be glued to!
