A Swedish Brand Just Lost Its Trademark Protection After a Legal Battle with Google

On July 14, 2026, Sweden's Patent and Market Court ruled that Bankomat has lost its trademark protection.

The case began when Bankomat AB sued Google, arguing that Google Translate infringed its trademark by translating "ATM" into the Swedish word "bankomat."

Google responded by asking the court to invalidate the trademark, arguing that "bankomat" had become the generic Swedish word for a cash withdrawal ATM rather than a distinctive brand name.

The court agreed with Google.

The name Bankomat itself is a combination of the Swedish words "bank" and "automat" (machine), making it very similar in meaning to the English term ATM.

This is known as trademark genericide—when a trademark becomes so widely used that it turns into the common name for a product or service.

Famous examples include Thermos, Aspirin, Escalator, and Cellophane (depending on the country).

A reminder for every business owner: Building a famous brand is only half the battle. You also have to protect it from becoming the generic name for what you sell.
