Tutoring project of Chalmers aimed at mentoring and helping primary school students with homework (e The recruitment of mentors is a distinctive stage as well.
Chalmers Tutoring Project it is an initiation of Chalmers University of Technology in the year 2009 (Fall term) to motivate and inspire primary school students towards mathematics and natural science subjects by promoting mathematical thinking, increasing confidence to discover mathematics in broader perspective. Sweden accepts immigrants from varied countries around the world, who represent a lar
ge density in the population. There exist a considerable number of students in the educational institutions whose native language is not Swedish. It has been seen that these students have not been performing well, consequently leading towards difficulties in pursuing higher education in future. Having a weak foundation in mathematics, is one of the biggest drawback of these students in the primary school level. Chalmers as the first step towards helping the society face this challenge initiated this project where mathematical science students contribute in sharing and disseminating mathematical thinking in primary level. The idea was to help students with mathematics possibly in their mother tongue also in Swedish. To support the idea, one international student and one Swedish student together mentor a group of primary school students after their regular schooling hours. This bilingual pedagogical strategy employs enormous brain storming in students and turn out to be an effective learning process. We try to recruit highly motivated mentors, who are eager in encouraging mathematical thinking, knows how to create an inspiring climate within a group moreover who wants to make learning more exciting and meaningful. Not only the school students are beneficial from the project but also, Chalmers students are getting and opportunity in helping the society and have an extra job beside their education. The engagement of international students in the project implies that Chalmers highly encourages international environment in the society.
