Has always been a vital trait in martial arts, and is needed more than ever. It has never been so rare though.
Low agency environments numb, and dumb us down via constant non-native sensory stimuli. Gradually shutting down a plethora of first hand experience sensoric/receptor pathways to favor the overload of visual and audible second hand principle/representations of/simulation (someone else's experience, algorithm or expression). In that sense at that level, content reaching you does not, and most often has not a physical real world origin. It is fake. But interpreted as real. This is an example of the system/machine/form is put before intent. The opposite of the above saying. That creates a hollow, in the long term meaningless and un-natural state normalized/chronic state.
Under the radar this process makes us more and more consumers/spectators/receivers and less and less the creators of and active parts in an interrelated real world.
And no, you cannot outsource this one. It is a trait of combining innate organic instincts with acquired trained skill - Yin & Yang. That defines Kung Fu and Neijia.
It is not a calculation. Not a left brain hemisphere thing. It is a field of awareness and consciousness. Instead of shutting down faculties, you become "super-natural".
Meaning more than you were before you entered the training.
The above saying connects to this. It relates to having this sixth sense of knowing something is off. It is detecting the opponents technique before he even launches it. Almost a psychic level of fighting foreseeing the future. personally i believe when we practice this we are bending the laws of quantum physics where time, energy and space are in relation. But not a fixed default relation. So be careful with what you spend time and energy upon. You will not get it back. And what space/environment you are in on a regular basis.
The way to train it though, is not in front of the screen where the simulation the representation of something is presented.
On the contrary, it is by direct real neurological sensory experience connected to nature.
The origin of authenticity.
Gather.
Get your asses outdoors and practice.
Be curious. Feel what it is like.
Do not strive for a result.
Personally i do Tai Chi Chuan because I enjoy doing it. Not because it has a given result .
It is the reset of things gone wayward in this crazy busy content filled world.
Cultivate in order to reap.
Empty yourself
Eyes clear
Hands Ready
See you soon.
Thanks to fellow Tai Chi Chuan colleague and friend Sam Masich for inspiration in this direction.
