Historical background

Inauguration of Om Durman Islamic University was in 1912. Establishing a faculty of medicine remained a dream which was realized by the decision of the Senate in 1988. The first dean was appointed in 11/11/1998. 27 male students and 31 females were accepted for the academic year 1990/1991. Qualified staff and other laboratory logistics were availed for phase 1. Establishment of a faculty of medicine in Teaching commenced in 24th Feb 1991 at Om Durman Youth and Children Palace. The teaching philosophy was community oriented and problem based learning in concordance with the needs of the Federal and State Ministries of Health in collaboration with the primary health care centres Military Corps Hospital. One of the great achievements at this stage was the formulation of the curriculum after three consecutive workshops starting in 31/07/1991 for phase I (the first year) and in 15 /12/1991 for phase II The second and third years). Pioneers of medical education from various medical colleges, Ministry of Health and Military Corps with guidance of Prof. Basheer Hamad the WHO Consultant have participated in designing the curriculum for phase I and II. The curriculum of phase III together with the rules and regulation of the evaluation was accomplished in the third workshop from 5th through 8th May 1993. Lecture theatres, laboratories for biochemistry, physiology, pathology, microbiology as well as the dissection room were constructed in the main university buildings at Abu Sieid where both the staff and the students moved to in The 1st Du Al Haja 1413 i,e, 21st March 1993. In July 12th 1993 all of the students were accommodated including the 1180 students who returned from abroad as consequence of the High Education Revolution Declaration. In 2004 Curriculum development workshop at the Sudanese Medical Specialization Board followed by serial workshops in 2005 in the same board and at Khartoum Teaching Hospital (The Nephrology Seminar Room) and in 2nd -3rd May at Ibn Sina Hospital the proposal of the current curriculum was passed. Evaluation

This faculty uses a transparent system of auditing and criticism in all aspects related to the evaluation of the student, teachers and curriculum utilizing judgement of external examiners and expertise in the field of medical education in order to achieve proper and neutral medical conclusion. The process of evaluation is based on the success of the student in the exams held at the different semesters to achieve the required Grand Point Aggregate (GPA) to proceed from one semester to the other and to pass in examinations of all subjects of Phase I and Phase II to be eligible to proceed to the clinical phase (Phase III). The types of evaluation:

1- The formative assessment:

The formative assessment is used to detect and correct the difficulties and obstacles that face the students to rectify his progress in the medical education.

2- The Summative assessment:

The purpose of the summative assessment is to assess the student if he is successful to proceed from one semester to the succeeding semester and from one phase to the following one. It is being done immediately after each and every course. The overall evaluation consists of:

a- The continuous evaluation: This evaluates the performance of the student during the course. It consists of the punctuality, attendance, participation in the various academic and practical sessions, writing reports and assignments as well as participation in seminars. The continuous evaluation forms 20% of the total evaluation in each phase of the curriculum. b- The Final examination:

The final evaluation is at the end each and every course in the form of all or part of the following types of examination:

1- Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs).

2- Short Structured Answer Questions (SSAQs).

3- Problem solving Modified Essay Questions (MEQs)

4- Objective Structured Clinical (or) Practical Examination (OSCE

or OSPE).

5- Dissertations

6- Clinical examination that consist of long case and short cases. The Final examination comprises 80% of the total evaluation of the courses at each of phase I, II and III. The final examination after Phase I and II:

The examination committee has the right to choose the type of examination suitable to the concerned course and has the right to decide the percentage of each part of that exam when different methods are decided for that particular exam. The final examination of Phase III comprises 80% to be distributed as follows:

1- 40 degrees for Written Examination distributed as follows:

a- Type A MCQs (60% = 24 degrees). b- SSAQs and MEQs (40% = 16 degrees).

2- 60 degrees for the Clinical Examination which is formed of:

a- OSCE = 20 degrees. b- Long and Short Cases = 40 degrees. The Pass Mark is considered from the TOTAL AGGREGATE to be written as guide line to all internal and external examiners. Students who pass all phases successfully and the Final exams will be awarded MBBS degree by the Senate of The University

International recognition:

The Faculty is one of Omdurman Islamic University Faculties. Therefore it is is a governmental high teaching institute. It is a member of the Union of the Arab arab universities and African Union of Universities. The Faculty ios also an active member of the League Sudanese Medical Faculties and League of The Arab faculties of Medicine. The faculty is registered in The WHO "East Medeteranian"

Alumini of this Faculty are either working or getting training in many different Western Countries as UK, Ireland, USA, Netherland, Middle east and African contries as Eagypt, Palastine , Syria, Somalia, Nigeria, Comoron and Many Gulf Countries. Objectives of the Faculty of Medicine:

The main objectives of this faculty is to graduate a medical doctor who has good medical ethics, kind manners and behaviour, cooperative with and faithful to the others, confident, likes to develop his knowledge and capabilities through reading, research, and performs his duties as follows:

1- Manages the medical problems successfully.

2- Efficiently treats the urgent and emergency cases.

3- Utilises the Comprehensive Health Polices.

4- Knows the principals of the various subspecialties

5- Intimately related to the community.

6- Observes the Islamic behaviour, attitudes

7- Works with efficiency to be the model for the others.

8- Can become a leader in the community through his efficiency and

kindness.

9- Designs and execute plans to manage the community medical

problems.

10- Follows the recent and continuous development in medicine.

11- Preaches for Islam through his good behaviour, manner,

performance and consideration of the simple human being.

12- Develops and improves his way of self learning and cooperation with

the others. The principals and main features:

1- The Faculty makes sure that the standard is in keeping with the

recognized medical standard.

2- The Faculty make sure that the kind Islamic behaviour is reflected in

the best medical performance.

4- The Curriculum follows the recent advances in Medical Education.

5- The concept of Health for ALL People should be well observed and

practiced.

7- Effective utilization of the established medical institutions and its

Medicine.

10- The Teem Work Policy will be adopted in all activities of the Faculty

The Educational policies:

1- The Arabic language is the main language for teaching

special emphasis on other languages particularly the English

language.

2- The Faculty encourages translation of medical sciences and

publication in Arabic language.

3-The Faculty encourages teaching from Islamic perspective.

4- The faculty adopt Problem Based Learning (PBL) to develop the

observational, thinking, and hypothesis capabilities in complete

freedom and independent method.

5- The educational activities will be closely related to the medical

problem of the single patient and the whole community at all

strata of the Health Care System.

6- The Curriculum is based on integration of the basic and clinical

medical sciences.

7- The curriculum is based on integrated modules (courses).

8- During the study directed free periods are allowed in not more

than 20% of the total teaching hours of the course.
