When we embrace uncertainty, we become less attached to constantly achieving and more grounded in our identity — who we are beyond the outcome.

What I’ve learnt is that when we place too much importance on success, failure or setbacks can feel deeply personal. We start to connect the outcome with our sense of who we are.

But when our identity isn’t tied to whether we win, lose, succeed or fail, it becomes easier to let go of that feeling in our body, pause, and find another way forward.

The outcome is something that happened. It isn’t who we are.

When I first started my business, I made 20 cold calls a day. There were so many rejections and plenty of dead ends. Some days, I genuinely wondered what I was doing.

At the same time, I was doing my mindfulness training, and one thing really stayed with me: the pause.

The pause I talk about all the time.

It’s okay to be rejected. It’s okay to feel lost, scared or unsure. I’ve felt all of it. But I’ve learnt to trust myself, keep going and stay close to the people who genuinely want to see me grow.

Those are the moments I choose to hold onto.

The rest is just noise.

I’m really proud to share my feature with The Voice of Early Childhood, exploring something I believe sits at the heart of educational leadership: it starts with us.

As leaders, we spend so much time thinking about our children, our teams and the communities we support. But meaningful change also asks us to look inwards.

How are we showing up?
How do we respond when things feel difficult?
Are we modelling the reflection, regulation and wellbeing we encourage in others?

Leadership isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about remaining curious, reflective and willing to grow.

When we take care of the culture within ourselves, we are better placed to create a culture where others can thrive.

It starts with us. 🌿

Before we ask our teams to regulate, reflect and grow, we have to be willing to do the same.

Leadership starts with how we show up.

It means noticing our own reactions, being curious about our patterns and recognising when we might need to pause, reset or approach something differently.

We cannot ask others to reflect if we are unwilling to look inwards ourselves.

For me, this is where meaningful leadership begins — not with having all the answers, but with the willingness to keep learning alongside the people we lead.

It starts with us. 🌿

The pause is not a weakness in leadership. It is often where our most thoughtful leadership begins.

Before we respond, correct, solve or make a decision, we can create a little space.

Pause. Notice. Breathe.

Then ask: What does this moment actually need from me?

That small pause can change the tone of a conversation. It allows us to move from reacting automatically to responding with greater clarity, curiosity and intention.

We teach children to pause and regulate. As educational leaders, we need to model it too.

The pause is part of the practice. 🌿

As educational leaders, we often walk into a room thinking about what everyone else needs.

But I’ve learned to ask myself first: What am I bringing into the room?

My energy. My expectations. My assumptions. The way I listen. The way I respond.

Leadership isn’t about getting it right all the time. It’s about having enough self-awareness to notice ourselves, reflect and adjust when needed.

Because the way we show up has an impact on the people around us.

It starts with us. 🌿

Wellbeing isn’t an extra. It’s woven into the everyday culture we create.

It’s in the workload we set, the conversations we have, the expectations we communicate and the relationships we build.

As educational leaders, we can talk about wellbeing — but our teams experience it through how we lead.

Do people feel heard?
Do they feel supported?
Do they feel safe enough to pause, reflect and ask for help?

Creating emotionally resilient communities begins with the adults within them.

It starts with us.

Change in education doesn’t begin with another initiative, policy or programme. It begins with us.

As leaders, we set the tone through how we listen, respond, reflect and show up for the people around us.

When we take the time to look inwards, we create space for healthier teams, supported educators and emotionally resilient communities.

Reflective leaders. Supported educators. Stronger communities.

This is at the heart of my work at JL Education — bringing together educational leadership, mindfulness, SEL and wellbeing to create meaningful, sustainable change.

🌿 Change starts from within.
