1.

Increase the awareness of public about the neurological diseases and role of genetics in its acquisition and in explaining the increasing incidence of these diseases.

2. Create a sense of collaboration between specialties concerned with neurological sciences and scientific research.

3. Encourage young doctors and scientists to be be engaged into neurogenetics and associated research fields and t

Liena Elbaghir on LinkedIn: Pathogenic Variants in ABHD16A Cause a Novel Psychomotor Developmental 22/08/2021

[22/08, 07:44] Dr, Liena Elsayed: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/liena-elbaghir-16a54726_pathogenic-variants-in-abhd16a-cause-a-novel-activity-6835067946713268224-OiC8
[22/08, 07:44] Dr, Liena Elsayed: Dream finally comes true

Now we finally celebrate the crowning of all our efforts in the Sudanese Neurogenetic team and project (NGS) with the publication of our discovery of a new GENE in HSP identified for the first time in two Sudanese families with great potential for treatment discovery and biomarkers identification.

A gene which resulted from hard work during my PhD under the supervision of Prof Giovanni Stevanin and Prof Ammar Eltahir since 2015 in our First cohort then my competent student Ashraf found a supporting family in our Second cohort stressing its importance and confirming its role as a new gene causing HSP.

I hope all the other new genes we identified and pending confirmation through the lengthy functional studies will find their way to finalization and publication soon in shaa Allah

My dream of introducing neurogenetics to my beloved country Sudan seemed impossible to achieve when I graduated 2002 but passion, perseverance, patience, successful collaborations (national and international) and before all faith in Allah and His Almighty support made it possible and I was finally able create the NGS team during my PhD studentship (2013) and later graduate as the first Sudanese neurogeneticist.

I was determined to make the team multigenerational multidisciplinary to train Sudanese junior scientists in different stages (undergraduates, postgraduates, master students and PhD students) to have a continuous flow of Sudanese neurogeneticists and now we managed to find scholarships for five PhD students in prestigious universities in France and Germany with God help (we celebrated the PhD degree awarded to two of them Dr.Ashraf Kambalawy and Dr. Mutaz Amin after discussing their PhD thesis with excellence and three more distinguished students are pending soon the completion of their degree soon)

But the journey was not a solo I had the support of many whom I consider confounders of the NGS: my team members, my clinical collaborators in different disciplines of neuropediatrics, neurology and related fields (biochemistry, neurophysiology, ophthalmology, radiology, psychiatry, ...) and my mentors.

Special thanks to:

My first NGS members and cornerstones: Dr.Ashraf Kambalawy, Miss Rayan Abubaker, Dr.Mahmoud Koko, Dr.Arwa Babai and all generations of the team whose perseverance shaped the NGS.

Our amazing collaborators:
Dr.Inaam Gashey, Dr.Ahlam Hamed, Dr.Maha Elseed, Prof. Alexis Brice, and Prof. Giovanni Stevanin ( who was a cornerstone for the NGS establistment story)

My great mentors:
Prof. Ammar Eltahir, Prof. Muntaser Eltayeb, and Prof.Mustafa Idris

My supporting friends: (Prof.Victor Patterson and Prof. Melanie Newport )

All those who supported the NGS helping it achieve astonishing results highlighting the high novelty and potential of Sudanese neurogenetic studies changing a lot the way neurology is perceived in my country.

We look forwards to more achievements despite all obstacles in shaa Allah

History of genetics: When was it born? Genetics is the biology of heredity, which we can consider as an experimental profession that merges various aspects of biology. Enormous strides in technology, biology, and science have allowed geneticists to prove that some genetic differences are due to disease, and the capacity to change genes u...
