Following an interest that she developed studying architecture from 2008-2013, Zainab Gaafar nurtured her desire to peel back the hidden layers of Khartoum one at a time; and to contextualize the built environment around her. In 2014 she started a project aiming to document interesting, forgotten, and even abandoned buildings around the city; in 2016 the project was given the name Urban

This film produced by Klozium Studios/ Nas Shagala ناس شغالة titled Amal Band “The Hope Band” is the first of its kind, as it was filmed entirely in the Bidhaawyeet language and talks about Amal Band, the first performance band for girls from the Beja tribe.

The speaker in the new episode on Language and Heritage is Sandios Kudi, a writer, lecturer at the University of Khartoum and an arts and culture enthusiast. The episode also features an audio clip of Mohamed El Amin from the film Amal Band, produced by Nas Shagala ناس شغالة Campaign and Klozium Studios. Mohamed El Amin is a music professor and founder of the Omkar Research Center, which is interested in documenting the Beja heritage and the Bidhaawyeet language in eastern Sudan. Language is the primary medium through which communities express both their identity and their cultural heritage. More importantly, it is a means of transmitting local knowledge, cultural and social values, and collective memory. Language is also involved in all forms of oral expression of heritage. In this short episode of the Khartoum Podcast, we explore the topic of language as a repository of local heritage, culture, and indigenous knowledge. The second season of the Khartoum Podcast was produced as part of the campaign, funded by the Safeguarding Sudan’s Living Heritage Project.

At Jille Center for Storytelling Arts, we are thrilled to have one of our co-founders, Iyas Hassan, participate in an exciting episode of the second season of Khartoum Podcast, produced by the Studio Urban team as part of the campaign, funded by the Safeguarding Sudan’s Living Heritage project.
Oral storytelling has always been a vital part of how we pass down knowledge and history in Sudan, but today it takes on even greater significance amid the challenges we face. The loss of history due to war has become one of the most pressing issues confronting us. In this episode of Khartoum Podcast, we were delighted to have Our friend Iyas Hassan joining as a guest alongside Dr. Mahasin Youssef, Ms. Sara Al-Naqar, and Ms. Reem Abbas, in a discussion about the importance of oral documentation and the central role women play in preserving collective memory, particularly during times of conflict and strife.
