DEVELOPING AN ANDROID APP TO TRANSLATE SIGNS LANGUAGE

The collaboration between the اتحاد الصم القومي السوداني Sudan National Union of Deaf Persons and Comboni College of Science and Technology continues. On 17th August, Mr. Mohamed Jib Allab, President of the Union, and Fr. Jorge Naranjo in the name of the College signed the agreement to develop an Android app that translated signs for deaf persons into Arabic text. The aim of the project is to develop a Minimum Value Product that will be the foundation of an app that will facilitate the inclusion of deaf persons. The project is funded by Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo - Ufficio di Addis Abeba and led by AISPO.

While a CCST team of the computer science department is developing the application, Mr. Alfred Deemer is recording signs in the new video studio of the College.

Comboni College of Science and Technology Italy in Sudan

The premises of Comboni College of Science and Technology in Port Sudan were honored with the visit of Mr. Junaid Sorosh-Wali, Head of Office and UNESCO Sudan, and Dr. Luca Li Bassi, health of UNDP Sudan-Health department. We could share about our activities and explore ways of collaborating for the benefit of Sudanese people in the fields of nursing education and inclusion of persons with disabilties.

21 July - Computer Course including students with hearing impairment complete

The computer course that combined six hearing students with seven students with hearing impairment supported by a sign language translator of the Sudanese Union of Deaf Persons had started on Monday 15 June and finished last 21 July. The course is pioneer in the integration of the two kinds of students together. Workshop: Drafting a Regulatory Framework for Online Higher Education Programs

On 21–22 July 2026, the University of Juba hosted the workshop “Drafting a Regulatory Framework for Online Higher Education Programs”, a key activity of the EAGLE project. Organized in a hybrid format, the workshop brought together representatives from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MoHEST), higher education institutions, legal and ICT experts, and EAGLE partner universities to discuss the development of a national regulatory framework for online higher education in South Sudan.

The workshop aimed to support the country’s efforts to establish a regulatory framework to guide the implementation of quality online higher education programmes. Throughout the two-day event, participants examined the legal, academic, and technological dimensions of online education while exploring international experiences that could inform future policy development in South Sudan.

A central contribution of the workshop came from the EAGLE consortium, whose partners shared their expertise and experiences in regulating and implementing online higher education. Experts from the Universitat Politècnica de València, the University of Nicosia, Comboni College of Science and Technology, and Tangaza University presented regulatory approaches from Europe, Spain, Cyprus, Sudan, and Kenya, providing participants with valuable international and regional perspectives to support informed decision-making.

Developing a Legal Framework for Online Higher Education for South Sudan

In the framework of the Erasmus Project, Enhancing Higher Education e-Learning Structures and Modules in Conflict Regions of East Africa (EAGLE), the new Minister of Universities and Technology of South Sudan (MoHEST), Hon. Changkuoth Bichiok Reth, opened the 2-days workshop on the development of a Legal Framework for Online Higher Education for South Sudan. This work package of the above mentioned project aims to facilitate a multi-stakeholder discussion to identify key principles, quality standards, and governance mechanisms for the development of a National regulatory framework for online Higher Education programs in South Sudan.

Different facilitartors presented the legal frameworks in Europe, Kenya, Sudan and other countries of the region. Mr. Allajabo Khamis (MoHEST) presented a proposal of road map for developing the framework draft. The works will continue on22 July.
The project is co-funded by the European Union and led by Universitat Politècnica de València UPV. The other partner universities along with CCST are (Ahfad University for Women, Catholic University of South Sudan, St. Mary’s College of Juba, University of Eldoret - U.O.E the Institute for Social Transformation - IST and University of Nicosia).

SIGNS LANGUAGE EXAMS

In collaboration with the اتحاد الصم القومي السوداني and AISPO, in the framework of the project "Integrated and Multisectoral Health Care for Displaced Persons, Refugees and Host Community in Port Sudan and Kassala” (AID 13105), Comboni College of Science and Technology in Port Sudan organized the first session of exams for the ends of levels 1 and 2 of the learning program displayed in the web platform (https://sl.combonikhartoum.com/) designed by these partners with funding from the Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo - Ufficio di Addis Abeba.

Nine students sat for level 1 exams last Wednesday 8 July. They are employees of the Traffic Police, the Social Care Department of the Ministry of Health and Social Development, the Sea Ports Corporation, Red Sea State Police, Bank of Sudan and Osman Digna Hospital.

As for the 14 candidates who sat for level 2, they were teachers of the schools for deaf persons of Sawakin and Port Sudan.

These exams for these distinguished students who followed the learning materials of the web platform represents a step forward for the inclusion of persons with hearing impairment.

Renovation of Al-Amal School in Port Sudan

The ambassador of Italy to Sudan, H.E. Michele Tommasi, the Directors of AICS-Rome and Agenzia Italiana per la Cooperazione allo Sviluppo - Ufficio di Addis Abeba, Marco Rusconi and Michele Morana, AISPO (Federico Chiodi) and the General Directors of the Ministry of Health and Social Development, Dr. Ahlam Abdel Rasul for Health and Dr. Ilham Idriss Gismallah for Social Development, and the Ministry of General Education for Special Education, inaugurated the renewed Al-Amal School for Persons with Hearing Impairment.

This achievement was possible thanks to the project Support to the Accessibility of Social, Health and Educational Services and the Economic Empowerment of People with Disabilities in the Areas of Port Sudan and Kassala, led by AISPO and funded by AICS. As part of this project, Comboni College was entrusted with developing an online platform to support the learning of Sudanese Sign Language and with organizing computer courses that integrate persons with different kinds of disabilities. We considered this not simply a technical assignment, but a contribution to a more inclusive Sudan, where communication is a bridge rather than a barrier.

WORKS IN PROGRESS

While CCST started some rehabilitation works that will demand some time, CCK basic section and Secondary School are almost ready. They plan to resume their activities next September.

2 July 2026 - VISIT OF ITALIAN AMBASSADOR AND AICS DIRECTOR

CCST premises were honored today with the visit of the Italian ambassador to Sudan, His Excellency Michele Tommasi, the Director of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), Dr. Marco Riccardo Rusconi, and the Chargé d’affairs, Mr. Simone Corsale.
The ambassador is finishing his term of service in Sudan and will be moving to Senegal. CCST thanks him his support during the last four years and wishes him happiness and health in his new term.
