We were delighted to welcome back Professor Abdullahi Ahmed An-Naim, the Charles Howard Chandler Professor of Law at Emory University School of Law in Atlanta, Georgia, and a world-renowned scholar of Islam, Human Rights, and Islamic law. Professor An-Naim will develop the thesis of his recent book, published in 2021 by Cambridge University Press; "Decolonising Human Rights".
In this book, Professor An-Naim challenges both historical interpretations of Islamic Sharia and Neo-Colonial ideas of Human Rights and stresses the decisive role of human agency in determining change. He urges recognition of the universality of human rights through internal discourse in African and Islamic societies and a people-centric approach that empowers individuals to decide how human rights will be understood and integrated into their communities.
