Terry Moncherry, a visual artist from Seychelles, recently shared his experience of participating in the International World Art Day 2026 celebrations held in Mauritius, an event that brought together artists from across the globe.

‘Today, I take a moment to reflect on an experience that has been both humbling and deeply meaningful. Representing Seychelles during the International World Art Day celebrations in Mauritius has been one of the greatest honors of my journey as an artist.

Being part of the Exhibition Nations event allowed me to stand alongside creatives from many different countries, all united by a shared passion for art and cultural expression. In that space, I felt proud to carry the identity of Seychelles and share a piece of my heritage with the world.

One of the highlights of this experience was the opportunity to meet the President of Mauritius, as well as the Minister of Sport and the Minister of Education. I also had the privilege of visiting the Parliament of Mauritius and meeting the Honourable Speaker. These moments reminded me of the importance of art not just as expression, but as a bridge between people, cultures, and leadership.

My artistic contribution went beyond performance. I spent time working with children with disabilities, using art as a tool to connect, uplift, and inspire. Those moments were powerful and reminded me why I chose this path, art has the ability to reach hearts in ways words sometimes cannot.

I also presented a live art performance that combined Sega dance with body painting of the Seychelles flag. It was my way of bringing movement, identity, and storytelling together—sharing my culture in a form that is both visual and emotional. Seeing the audience engage with it, and knowing it was featured on Mauritian television, made it even more special.

The journey is still unfolding. Tomorrow, we will host a carnival-style art show under the theme “Say No to Drugs,” where paintings will be displayed on specially designed pickup trucks. It is inspiring to see how art continues to carry messages that matter, reaching communities in creative and impactful ways.

As the program continues until the 20th, I remain grateful for every moment, every connection, and every opportunity to represent Seychelles on this international stage.’
