There are 4 major variables of overload to any training plan: frequency, intensity, type and time/duration. To progress overload, you can increase training in any of these 4 major variables. However, gains are more significant for beginners. As we begin to reach our maximum potential capaicty in that domain, fitness gains reduce in relation to the amount of progressive overload. This is a natural plateau. To offset this, intermediate and advanced athletes begin to plan their training into a more organized schedule of fluctuating cycles and periods also called periodization.
