In this Flemish painting (circa 1568), a wedding is depicted. At the forefront, guests are illustrated eating and drinking. “Bowls of rice pudding and tankards of ale dominate this rural feast. Guests pay more attention to their plates than to the new bride, who sits alone and ignored in front of a dark green wall hanging.” At this time, most Europeans belonged to the peasant class. But, with this painting, historians argue the vitality of food and beverage for Europeans of all classes. When Europeans encountered the New World; food and drink culture amplified. Consequently, economics connected the New World back to Europe. In the late 1700s, the French administration attempted to place the colony of Seychelles in the context of the international spice trade.
