Last week, we were honoured to sit down with the Minister for Education and Human Resources, Hon. Lanelle Tanangada, a former teacher and New Zealand Scholarship alumni. She shared with us reflections on her learning and career journey, as well as her priorities for education in 2021.

Even before starting school, Minister Tanangada told us her routine was shaped by the classroom and the school bell. “My father was a plumber at Betikama Adventist College and my mother was a primary school teacher at Burns Creek Adventist High School, so I grew up in the school environment”. The Minister reflected on how her father and mother always instilled in their family a strong value for education. “My father was the most outstanding mentor and I thank him for his wisdom in ensuring I gained a quality education – one that has shaped my foundation”. She acknowledged the sacrifices made by her parents to enable her to obtain an education, “because of my father’s sacrifice, I was determined to always do my very best”.

The Minister carried this drive and determination through her school and university years. But she also highlighted one special group of people who influenced her learning journey – her teachers. “My teachers had a great impact on my career path, and contributed to guiding me through my career choices. When I was in grade six, one teacher told me ‘you will be an excellent teacher one day’”.

After gaining a Bachelor of Education from the Pacific Adventist University, Minister Tanangada re-entered the classroom in 2003, this time as an English teacher at Kukudu Adventist College – a post she would hold for eight years. From here, her curiosity for learning led her to apply to undertake a Master of Education in Aotearoa New Zealand, at University of Waikato.

With a smile, the Minister recalled the answer she gave to a question in the application for a New Zealand Scholarship: how will your study contribute to the socio-economic development of your home country? She detailed how her qualification would influence policy makers to support teaching and learning outcomes. “I never dreamed that I would one day be sitting here as the Minister, to ensure the policies of the Ministry are implemented.”

Minister Tanangada reflected fondly on her time at Waikato University, sharing how she particularly valued the opportunities for the “exchange of culture”, the stimulating and challenging nature of her study, the enduring friendships and life-long connections she made, and the food! However there were tough times too – being away from her family through much of her study was difficult, and the cold climate of New Zealand was a shock.

Returning to Solomon Islands, Minister Tanangada held a number of senior leadership posts at Kukudu Adventist College, Burns Creek Adventist School and Betikama Adventist College. From there, she entered politics and now holds the education portfolio. When asked about her top priorities for education in 2021, Minister Tanangada emphasised the priority to see that all children have access to quality basic education. This “requires a lot of commitment on the part of every education stakeholder, right from the Ministry to teachers, parents and students…to help our young people become responsible citizens with values and the skills to survive in the ever changing world we live in.”

Reflecting on the aspiring young generation of Solomon Islanders, Minister Tanangada spoke of the potential that each individual has – through both formal education and other learning pathways. Regardless of an individual’s education journey, “no one is a failure”. She acknowledged that there are constraints in the education system that do not cater for all the nation’s young ones to complete formal schooling. “The challenge for us in the ministry, and the government, is how we are going to address this. What other opportunities are we going to provide for these young students, who are all young citizens with potential.”

“Looking around us in Solomon Islands we are so blessed with so much wealth, in our soil, in our sea and through the family and friends that surround us”, the Minister said. She thanked those on social media who have shared their personal learning experiences from outside the formal education system, encouraging young people to continue to pursue their dreams, through academic, vocational, entrepreneurial or alternative pathways. “For some it may be a longer journey, but I urge you to have patience. The passion to persevere and never give up must be in each young person’s vocabulary. The ‘I can do it’ spirit, must be engraved in our everyday thoughts”.

Taggio tumas Minister Tanangada for sharing these valuable insights and reflections from your life and career with us.
