Resilience in water and food supplies represent two major elements of the Kingdom's efforts towards a secure and sustainable future. Given the inextricable links between water and food and the critical importance of these locally and globally, the HALO Group seeks to address key components of this challenge. Overriding research goals include: 1) to better understand the processes and mechanism

"CubeSats deliver new insights into agricultural water use at daily and 3 m resolutions".
Great work by former student Bruno Jose Aragon Solorio, showcasing the opportunities of using high spatiotemporal satellite platforms for precision agriculture.
Using CubeSat imagery and PT-JPL, a sophisticated crop water use model, we demonstrate the potential of a 3 m daily crop water use product to drive the agricultural decision-making process.

Earth observation has traditionally required a compromise in data collection. That is, one could sense the Earth with high spatial resolution occasionally; or with lower spatial fidelity regularly. For many applications, both frequency and detail are required. Precision agriculture is one such examp...

State of the Climate 2017 has just been published in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society. Check out the chapter on land evaporation, led by international collaborators of the HALO group (and co-authored by Prof McCabe).

An international, peer-reviewed publication released each summer, the State of the Climate is the authoritative annual summary of the global climate published as a supplement to the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society. The report, compiled by NOAA’s Center for Weather and Climate at...

With the phenotyping campaign completed, we're now busy analyzing the results of this stress experiment. UAV based RGB, hyperspectral and thermal combined with comprehensive on-ground monitoring (from plant physiology through to pigment extractions), makes this a very unique data set. Here we show an automatic delineation of around 1,200 plants using object-based image analysis and the eCognition software. We're excited to be working alongside our colleagues in the The Salt Lab on this collaborative experiment.

Congratulations to Dr Oliver Lopez, who successfully defended his PhD this afternoon. Oliver's research focused on the quantification of groundwater abstractions via a coupling of remote sensing data and a land surface model. He'll be staying on in the group to operationalize this approach further.

We had around 10 posters, a few talks and a town-hall panel meeting at this years AGU - while also catching up with some old friends, colleagues and collaborators. We also made new connections and and networked with scientists from all over the world who were interested in our UAV and CubeSat work. Exhausting, but a lot of fun....looking forward to next years conference in Washington DC.

The highest resolution estimates of crop water use ever retrieved from space, together with some ultra-high LAI. All using Planet CubeSats https://goo.gl/dG9WfS. Lots of exciting opportunities and research being done within the HALO group using these data.

Farewell lunch for Steve Parkes with the group. Steve has been with the HALO team for almost 3 years, and has been instrumental in establishing our UAV program. We wish him all the best on his return back to Australia!

HALO are working with the Salt Lab at KAUST to investigate salt tolerance of tomato plants. HALO are deploying UAV systems fitted with thermal, hyperspectral and RGB cameras to investigate crop health.

If you're heading to AGU in New Orleans this year (Dec 11-15), check out our session on emerging EO technologies in hydrology (see below). There are also sessions on UAVs (H044) and new sensing approaches for global agriculture (B027) - should be a good one!

For urgently needed technical support, phone +1 (401) 334-0220 between the hours of 8:30 AM and 6:00 PM Monday through Friday, US Eastern Standard Time (GMT -05:00). At the prompt, enter support code 1438.
