Orcas in Mexico’s Gulf of California have been filmed ramming sunfish at full speed, hard enough to shatter them apart. Scientists call it “ram-to-fragment,” a coordinated hunting move where one orca holds the prey steady while another strikes.

The behavior is detailed in a new study co-authored by KAUST marine scientist Carlos Duarte, offering rare insight into how orcas cooperate, teach, and share food within their pods.

The Ibn Rushd Program is KAUST's flagship initiative to develop Saudi Arabia's next generation of researchers, scholars, and faculty.

The program gives high-achieving Saudi scholars transformative research experiences at KAUST and at top-tier global institutions, including Harvard, MIT, Stanford, and Oxford.

"KAUST was established as the house of wisdom, not just for the benefit of Saudi Arabia, but for the benefit of humanity," says Professor Osman Bakr, Chair of the Ibn Rushd Program. He describes energy, water, and food as the nexus where Saudi scientific leadership will be defined over the next 20 to 30 years.
