Assessment and Testing Concepts
Assessment is not just about giving tests; it’s about making informed decisions that improve learning.
In every course, from the first day to the final exam, assessment plays a crucial role in shaping both teaching and learning. But do we always use it effectively?
Let’s take a step back and reflect on two key areas: Types of Tests and Characteristics of a Good Test.
When we align the right type of test with sound testing principles, assessment becomes a powerful tool not just for grading but for learning.
The real question is, are we testing to evaluate… or to educate?

There is a very important teaching framework that often goes unspoken and is not widely highlighted in TEFL, CELTA, or DELTA courses:
𝗧𝗮𝘀𝗸-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝗧𝗕𝗟)
The main reason it doesn’t receive enough attention is not because it lacks value—quite the opposite.
It’s because doing TBL properly takes time.
A well-implemented TBL lesson typically requires 90 to 120 minutes, which is difficult to accommodate within the tight structure and time constraints of intensive teacher-training courses.
Last year, I had the opportunity to deliver a face-to-face training session for my colleagues at the university focusing on the TBL framework.
What made the session particularly valuable was that it included a live demo lesson within the training itself.
In other words, it was a:
Training Session + Demo Lesson
at the same time.
The workshop was fully recorded 🎥
However, it requires some editing:
• to protect the privacy of the colleagues who attended, and
• to integrate slides from my presentation, as the camera was mainly focused on me.
InshaAllah, I will upload the final video before Ramadan.
Please follow this post; it will be updated with the link as soon as it is ready.
Good luck 🤍

Two ideal demo lessons for English teachers
Reading lesson followed by a Grammar lesson in a real CELTA course by Elsaid Rashad, a CELTA Tutor at Cambridge English
If you’ve ever wondered how to move smoothly from a reading lesson to a grammar focus, these two demo lessons are a great example.
They show how grammar can be:
✔️ noticed naturally through a reading text
✔️ clarified in context
✔️ practiced meaningfully, not mechanically
Perfect for teachers who want practical, classroom-ready ideas and a clear lesson flow.
🎥 Watch the demos, reflect, and borrow what works for your own classes.
