On the 25th August 2011 the Higher Institute for Water and Power Technologies (HIWPT) started its first day of training for more than 100 new trainees. The project originated in January 2009 with the Blessing of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz during a meeting with the Chairman of ACWA Power. The establishment and opening of the Institute has been ACWA Power and NOMAC’s priority corporate responsibili
ty and sustainability project for the past 24 months. The HIWPT is located in Rabigh province and is a non profit making Institute that has been licensed by the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation (TVTC). It will provide industry specific vocational training to regional school leavers so that they can join the Saudi Arabian water desalination and power generation sector as skilled and certified operators and technicians. All the trainees have secured employment contracts with guaranteed jobs from their Sponsors at the end of the 2½ year program. The Institute’s ongoing success is assured due to the strong strategic partnerships that have been established with government authorities, water and power infrastructure sector partners, industry leaders, equipment manufacturers and plant operators. Technical Partners have been drawn from the desalinated water, power generation and industrial O&M sectors. The market leaders have been identified based on their technical expertise and market presence. They will be contributing primarily non-financial support in the form of knowledge, time, consultancy input on programs, equipment, master classes and site visits. The Partner network is the Institute’s support that will establish its reputation for world class training. Training Programs:
The Institute will primarily focus on the quality of vocational and technical skills and competencies, management, discipline and professionalism. The first years of operation will include programs for power and water desalination operators, mechanical technicians and electrical technicians. In future years the range of programs will extend to I&C, solar, health & safety and advanced O&M. All programs will be developed in close collaboration with the trainee’s employers (their sponsors) to ensure that the training outcomes meet the sectors’ actual needs.
