REMEMBERING: Imam Zain Al-Abideen
‎رضي الله عنهم

Best known by his title “The jewel among the devout”.

Imam Zain Al-Abideen belongs to the generation of tabieen, which was the first generation to follow the Holy Prophet’s ﷺ companions, and his Ahl al-Bayt. Distinguished for his knowledge and asceticism. His narrations are included in each of the six major books of Hadith.

During Karbala, Imam Zain al-‘Abideen was ill and he couldn’t take part in the battle. It was God’s will to save him so that the noble line of Imam Hussain should continue. Returning from which he said the famous stanzas which begin with: Ya Sayyidi irhamlana, ya Sayyidi irhamlana!

Imam Zain Al-Abideen turned all his attention to studying the Qur’an, Hadith and Fiqh attaining a very distinguished position in all these disciplines. His position as a direct descendent of the Prophet ensured for him a status of high respect among all Muslims.

He would not concern himself with who ruled and who took over the reins of power. To him, all that was an insignificant triviality. However, he would not approve of injustice, no matter by whom it was perpetrated. He took it upon himself to do good to all people, so that they would benefit by his action and advice. But his abandonment of politics did not stop him from enjoining what is right or speaking out against injustice.

In the chapter discussing the Spiritual Imams and role models of Tasawwuf, Al-Hujwiri (in Kashf al-Mahjub) mentions the virtues of Imam Zain ul Abideen and the Ahl al-Bayt who were exemplars of virtues such as: Asceticism (zuhd), Devotion in worship, Humility, Spiritual insight (ma‘rifah).

The Erudite Scholars say that the most number of sinners are forgiven on this day i.e. the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah. It is also known from the generality of the word 'Abd' that on this day, Muslims are forgiven in general, whether they are pilgrims or non-pilgrims. According to another narration, satan was not seen as belittled, disgraced, humiliated and infuriated on any other day as was seen on the day of Arafah because this day satan sees mercy being descended and major sins of people being forgiven by Allah.

Silk clothing is forbidden for men. Even if there is another piece of fabric (clothing) between the silk clothing and the body, it is Haraam in both conditions. One should also refrain from wearing the fabrics which are not really silk but appear to be silk, especially the Ulama or religious figures, as it will give people the opportunity of being suspicious or it could give others the excuse to wear silk clothing.

i.e. "initially" causing harm to someone's life or property. The condition for initiating the harm is imposed because it is permissible for the ruler and the judge to inflict harm in retribution as punishment. Similarly, whoever harbors enmity towards anyone, especially a Muslim, without any valid shar’i reason; he will be rejected in the court of Allah Almighty and whoever is rejected by the Lord of the worlds (entire creation), how can he ever reach welfare and success!?

The necessity to keep your apparent body and dress clean and tidy is undeniable but the purity of heart has its own significance. We take care of our apparent faces through washing to keep it clean from dirt and smudges so that the people would not know about any fault in our faces. But we do not take care of our hearts which are Seen by Allah Almighty. Whereas, we should have kept our hearts purified so that there would be no impurity left when Allah Sees to it. But it is a sad state of affairs that the heart is fully contaminated with dirt and filth whereas the face which is viewed by creation is kept impeccable and immaculate.
