Dear KSAALT Members and Guests,

You must be looking forward to our last workshop, for this academic year, Wednesday April 4, 2012, before the BIG event: KSAALT 5th Annual Convention on May 3, 2012.

When: April 4, 2012 (12:40 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.)
What: 2 GREAT workshops for the price of one!
Where : Effat University ( Effat Hall) Gate 13
Titles: Kagan Structures for Class-building & Using Video in Language Teaching
Presenters: Ms. Faten Salah & Ms. Nesrine Ajam

First Workshop: Kagan Structures for Class-building: Build relationships, create the class of your dreams! (1:05 – 2:45 p.m.)
Bio: Faten is the managing director of LEDS institute. She has a master degree in Secondary education, and a diploma in Montessori, TEFL, TESOL, and Golden teaching diploma. She is the exclusive trainer and representative for Fish philosophy and Kagan cooperative learning in the Middle East. She trains for Synthetic phonics, responsive classrooms, Differentiation Instruction, and different methods for teaching and learning.
Email: [email protected]

Abstract:
Why do teachers who do more classbuilding obtain higher academic scores? Classbuilding create relaxed alertness, the ideal state for learning. When students meet their needs for security and belonging, they are free to engage in higher-level learning. Disruptions and discipline problems decrease, speeding student learning. When students feel safe, known, respected, and appreciated they enjoy school more, like their teacher more, and are more prepared to learn and work hard. Come learn how to create the supportive classroom community that nurtures learning. Provide more nutrients for the brain with energizing class-builders. Through interactive structures, students are exposed to more functional language and radically increase their opportunity to practice language. Reduce the psychological and emotional distance between classmates and instill in students a sense of belonging. Create a caring, cooperative community of learners—and reap the benefits for your entire teaching career.

Second Workshop: Using Video in Language Teaching (2:50 – 3:30 p.m.)
Bio:
Ms. Nesrine Ajam is currently an English Language Instructor at Effat English Academy, Effat University. She received her BA in English Language & Literature from the Lebanese University and her Master of Arts in English Language Teaching from the University of Balamand, Lebanon. She carried out her thesis on “The Use of Video in Teaching English in a Lebanese Private University: A Case Study”. She has many years of experience in the field of ELT and continues to add to this experience through practical styles of teaching.
Email: [email protected]

Abstract:
Some researchers state that video exposes learners to authentic materials which makes it a suitable tool in education while others criticize it for encouraging passive learning. Lost between these two opposing viewpoints is the awareness of whether or not video is a viable teaching tool. The purpose of this workshop is to show how video can be used in English Language Teaching in a purely practical way. You will go home with a complete video lesson to be directly applied in your classrooms.

3:30 – 4:45 Evaluation and distribution of certificates

Kindly see the attached program schedule for further details

You could also buy Kagan books as they will have a booth!

And don’t forget to register by Tuesday (3rd April, 2012) if you haven’t already done so J. All you have to do is send a reply to this email with your name correctly spelt.

Abstract:
Of all the skills writing is often the one that students like the least. Why is that? Is it because writing tends to focus more on accuracy? Or is it because it can be a solitary activity that leaves students feeling at best bored and at worst frustrated? This session explores the differences between a product and process approach and shows how you can support the development of students’ writing skills through engaging and collaborative tasks.
