I was recently talking to some friends and one of them asked us to reflect on a seemingly easy question. What are we preparing our children for?

I keep coming back to this question.

Our children can now ask a phone almost anything and get an answer in seconds, often a good one. So what does it actually mean to educate a child today, when the thing school used to give them (knowledge) is now everywhere, free, and instant?

In my view, I don't think the answer is to fight technology, and I don't think it's to hand education over to it either. I think it's this: a machine can give a child an answer, but it can't decide if the question was worth asking. It can write an essay, but it can't tell if the argument is honest or fair. And it definitely can't give a child the feeling of struggling with something hard, failing, trying again, and finally thinking: I did this myself.

That feeling, that's the part we have to protect.

It's part of why I find Maria Montessori's ideas, over a hundred years old now, so relevant today. She believed in giving children real opportunities to explore, choose, concentrate, and work things out for themselves, with an adult close by, knowing when to help and when to simply step back. She wasn't thinking about AI. But somehow, it fits.

I don't know what the world will look like when our children are grown. I don't think anyone really does. But maybe that was never the job. Maybe the job has always been to raise children who are curious, resilient, thoughtful, and kind enough to meet whatever comes and shape it, not just survive it.

I would love to hear from other parents: what they think we should really be preparing our kids for?

🎉 Student Initiative Spotlight! 🍪🌿

Our incredible Upper Elementary (UE) class took learning beyond the classroom by organizing their very own bake sale! From planning and baking to marketing and selling, they did it all with creativity and teamwork. 🧁

With the money they raised, they chose to reward their hard work with a fun and nature-filled trip to Nyandungu Eco Park! 🌳

The day was filled with laughter, exploration, and appreciation for Rwanda’s beautiful biodiversity. What a meaningful way to combine entrepreneurship, collaboration, and joyful learning! 💚
