Studying financial inclusion: Asking questions about algorithms - Laterite 06/04/2022

Digital finance is on the rise in Rwanda, and it's increasingly important to hear from consumers about their experiences. But how do you study a complex concept like consumer protection in digital finance? Our team reflects on a qualitative phone survey we led for Center for Financial Inclusion at Accion in 2021:

Comparing methods to estimate coffee yield - Laterite 31/03/2022

Many coffee agronomy training programs aim to improve farmer incomes by increasing their yields. It's important to have good data about on-farm coffee yields so program implementers and policy-makers can make decisions based on quality data. But coffee yields are notoriously difficult to measure. How does a data-driven model to measure yield stack up against farmer recall? Michael Keenan explains:

Comparing methods to estimate coffee yield - Laterite The drawbacks and benefits of using farmer recall data to estimate coffee yield in Kenya, compared to an image recognition technology model.

Comparing methods to estimate coffee yield - Laterite 17/02/2022

Many interventions aim to improve smallholder farmers' incomes by providing training or inputs to improve crop yields. But yields are notoriously difficult to measure.

Can a data-driven model compare to farmer recall when it comes to measuring coffee yields? The answer might surprise you:

Randomized Control Trial of the Bandebereho intervention - Laterite 10/02/2022

📣New Case Study: Six-year follow-up of the Bandebereho intervention in Rwanda implemented by Promundo-US and Rwamrec to promote men’s engagement in maternal and newborn health, equitable caregiving, healthier couple relations, and the prevention of violence against women and children.

Six years after the original RCT, we revisited 1,199 couples and 800 children aged 4 to 7 years for surveys and child development assessments using Save the Children's IDELA. As always, our priority was to maintain respondent health, safety, and privacy while collecting high-quality data.

Read how we did it:

Randomized Control Trial of the Bandebereho intervention - Laterite Data collection that included surveys with men and their female partners, and child assessments with a sub-sample of 800 children aged 4 to 7 years
