This week, we talked about where new words come from in some of our classes.
Languages get new words in a few different ways!
They can come from other languages: Like "coffee" (Arabic), "jungle" (Hindi), or "vodka" (Russian)
They can be shortened, blended, or compounded: Like "scuba" (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus), "exam" (examination), "brunch" (breakfast + lunch), or "headphones" (head + phone)
Or, we can take an old word and use it in a new way: "sky" used to mean "cloud"; while "the cloud" is now a digital space; and "awful" meant full of awe (awesome), but now means something terrible!
What other examples can you think of?
